Meet The Shadows Between Us!
Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power:
1) Woo the Shadow King.
2) Marry him.
3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.
No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it.
But Alessandra’s not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen—all while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen?

YABC: What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
One day I was randomly thinking about how much I love bad boys (as you do). Just to clarify, I’m not referring to the “bad boy with a heart of gold” trope; I mean a real bad boy. Like Damon from The Vampire Diaries or Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Guys who do terrible things and like it. I realized right then that I really wanted to write one, but I knew it would be tricky. You can’t reasonably have your heroine get with the bad boy in the end if he’s doing bad things. Unless she was bad, too. That’s when Alessandra and the Shadow King came into being.
YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?
Alessandra is my favorite character. She is so ambitious and driven, and that was so fun to write! I loved that there were so few lines she wouldn’t cross. Writing a morally-gray character was beyond fun.
YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?
The novel always comes first for me. I’m terrible at titles. THE SHADOWS BETWEEN US wasn’t the original title for the book. I’d initially called it THEIR EVIL HEARTS. An author friend, Charlie N. Holmberg, helped me come up with the new title, because I wasn’t super excited about the first one.
YABC: What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?
I think the first scene of the book is actually my favorite. Most of the time I have to rewrite my beginnings over and over again until they finally feel right. But when I sat down to write the very first words of this novel, I remember everything just feeling right. Discovering Alessandra’s voice was an absolute delight, and I love how her scheming mind came through in that first chapter. Very few words have changed in the original from the time I first wrote it to publication.
YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?
I love the ruby-studded dagger and the black rose petals! It’s very symbolic of the plot of the book. Alessandra uses a ruby-studded dagger to kill the first boy who broke her heart. The black rose is the Shadow King, so to have the image of the dagger having stabbed the black rose is so perfect!
YABC: What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2020?
A Heart So Fierce and Broken by Brigid Kemmerer comes to mind right away! I loved A Curse So Dark and Lonely so much! I’m always in the mood for a good romance.
YABC: What was your favorite book in 2019?
The Merciful Crow by Margaret Owen! I loved the magic system and the characters so much! There’s not enough unique magic in fantasy!
YABC: What’s up next for you?
My next book is the first in a brand new duology! It’s tentatively titled THE SECRET BLADE, and it’s about a socially-anxious blacksmith who forges magical weapons. When she accidentally creates an all-powerful sword with the ability to extract secrets from those it cuts, she has to go on the run and protect it at all costs. This one will release February 2021, with the sequel to follow in 2022.
YABC: Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?
I enjoy revising way more. Writing down words is so difficult for me! It’s the rearranging and fixing that is fun for me! Probably because I’m a perfectionist.

This book summary captured my interest right away -- mostly from Alessandra's plan. Can't wait to read it! Also thinking I NEED the author's next book. That one sounds amazing, too.
The cover seems to foreshadow a lot of action! And the synopsis points to the same. Intrigue, deceit, and love make for an entertaining read. Reminds me a little bit of the plot for Holly Black's The Cruel Prince.
