Introducing Sara B Larson, YABC's Author of the Week!

Sara B. Larson is the best-selling and critically acclaimed author of the YA fantasy DEFY trilogy (DEFY, IGNITE, and ENDURE), the DARK BREAKS THE DAWN duology, SISTERS OF SHADOW AND LIGHT, and the forthcoming WARRIORS OF WING AND FLAME (Oct. 27, 2020, TorTeen/Macmillan). She can’t remember a time when she didn’t write books—although she now uses a computer instead of a Little Mermaid notebook. Sara lives in Utah with her husband, their four children, and their Maltese, Loki. She writes in brief snippets throughout the day and the quiet hours when most people are sleeping. Her husband claims she should have a degree in “the art of multitasking.” When she’s not mothering or writing, you can often find her at the gym repenting for her sugar addiction.

She’s online at www.SaraBLarson.com.

Meet Warriors Of Wing and Flame!

Acclaimed author Sara B. Larson continues her enchanting YA fantasy duology with a timeless fairytale feel in an original voice.

The doorway between the magical Visempirum and the human world has been reopened. Paladin are once more living in the citadel where Zuhra and Inara grew up completely isolated by the magical hedge that trapped them there. Amidst the brewing conflict between the Paladin and humans looms the threat of Barloc, who has stolen Inara’s immense power and continues to elude the Paladin who are desperately searching for him.

In this sequel to Sisters of Shadow and Light, Inara and Zuhra must navigate the treacherous paths of self-discovery, their love for each other, and for the boys who have captured their hearts. Together, they search for the strength within themselves to bridge the divide between the two worlds they inhabit, even as war threatens to destroy everything—and everyone—they love.

~ Author Chat ~

  1.       What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

I am the oldest of five girls, so I've always wanted to write a book about the bond between sisters. That was the first kernel of an idea. And then I saw an image of a girl with glowing blue eyes and I thought "what if there was a race of people that had power that made their eyes glow blue? And when they used it, it made their vein glow blue as well?" I decided to explore that idea. I wrote the first line of Sisters of Shadow and Light and then the first few pages and from there sprouted this whole series!

  1.       Who is your favorite character in the book?

Besides the obvious answer of Zuhra and Inara, I think my favorite character to write in Warriors of Wing and Flame was Loukas. He took me by surprise and I loved taking his character to new levels and getting to really know him.

  1.       Which came first, the title or the novel?

I came up with the idea for the characters and the book first. But for some reason I have such a hard time writing without a title, that I came up with the title for both books within a few days of fleshing out the plot for the series.

  1.       What do you like most about the cover of the book?

I love how both covers are so timeless and beautiful. The colors and symbolism are both just stunning. I feel so lucky to have such beautiful covers and such talented artists who create them!

  1.       What was your favorite book in 2020?

I actually have three so far - The Queen of Nothing was an absolutely amazing conclusion to The Cruel Prince series, I couldn't put it down. Bone Crier's Moon was so unique and fascinating, and has an amazing friendship plotline which I adored. And Beach Read was a breath of fresh air for me--it's adult fiction about a writer with writer's block. It was so timely for me because I've struggled with that during this pandemic and it was just the read I needed.

  1.      Which was the most difficult or emotional scene to narrate?

There were so many emotional scenes in this book. But some of the hardest ones to write were the ones where Inara and Zuhra were experiencing anxiety and panic attacks because of the trauma they experienced at the end of SOSAL. I knew they needed to experience those things to a degree when I plotted the sequel, but I ended up having a major panic/anxiety episode that lasted months before and during the drafting of WOWAF which led me to realize how much more prominent I needed to make those experiences for Zuhra and Inara. It was very difficult to write about those things while I was trying to recover from them myself, but it was also a powerful and healing experience. I tried to show some of the techniques that helped me through their stories in hopes it might help my readers who struggle with these things as well.

  1.      Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?

Interestingly, this has changed over the years. I used to love drafting the most--that passionate fury of creation, words pouring from my brain into my fingers and out to the computer. Buuuuut these days it doesn't come quite so easily anymore. My inner editor makes it very hard to draft actually the last few years. So now I love revising. That's where the real magic happens anyway. The story is all there, the potential is tapped but not realized yet. I love the process of making every book truly shine.

  1.      What would you say is your superpower?

Can determination be a superpower? Because I am so darn stubborn and determined. Once I decide to do something, I can't give up until I do it 100%. This often works to my advantage...but sometimes it's a detrimental superpower, because I can't always do everything I set out to accomplish. But I will go down fighting, that's for sure!

The red and black covers look so good next to other, and the castles are a perfect match to the feeling of the synopsis. Two sisters in a locked in fortress? Sounds amazing.
