Meet Aru Shah and The End Of Time!
Best-selling author Rick Riordan introduces this adventure by Roshani Chokshi about twelve-year-old Aru Shah, who has a tendency to stretch the truth in order to fit in at school. While her classmates are jetting off to family vacations in exotic locales, she'll be spending her autumn break at home, in the Museum of Ancient Indian Art and Culture, waiting for her mom to return from her latest archeological trip. Is it any wonder that Aru makes up stories about being royalty, traveling to Paris, and having a chauffeur?
One day, three schoolmates show up at Aru's doorstep to catch her in a lie. They don't believe her claim that the museum's Lamp of Bharata is cursed, and they dare Aru to prove it. Just a quick light, Aru thinks. Then she can get herself out of this mess and never ever fib again.
But lighting the lamp has dire consequences. She unwittingly frees the Sleeper, an ancient demon whose duty it is to awaken the God of Destruction. Her classmates and beloved mother are frozen in time, and it's up to Aru to save them.
The only way to stop the demon is to find the reincarnations of the five legendary Pandava brothers, protagonists of the Hindu epic poem, the Mahabharata, and journey through the Kingdom of Death. But how is one girl in Spider-Man pajamas supposed to do all that?
~ Interview ~
YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?
The makara who guards the thresholds between worlds because he is basically my dog, Panda. Panda is a Great Pyrenees. He was supposed to be a guard dog. Keyword: "supposed."
YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?
Novel! I am MISERABLE at titles...most my WIPs are titled: "A Thing That Happens And I Don't Know."
YABC: What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?
The scene with the Palace of Illusions. It wrenched my heart to write it and I cried for an hour! One of the hardest things when you're a kid is moving. It feels like you leave a piece of yourself behind and that's what I hoped to capture with that scene.
YABC: Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?
Keep your eyes on your own paper. Self-comparison will be the death of you.
YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?
Ah, so many things. Abigail Dela Cruz is a genius. I love Aru's dark skin. I love how she commands magic. I love the incandescent colors of the animals.
YABC: What was your favorite book in 2017?
City of Brass by S.K. Chakraborty. It's a gorgeously wrought, well-researched and heart-stopping book.
YABC: What’s up next for you?
The first book in my new young adult trilogy, The Gilded Wolves! La Belle Epoque Paris meets Davinci Code.
YABC: What would you say is your superpower?
I can tell within a couple of days the expiration of a gallon of milk. Clearly, I will change the world.
