Meet The Gilded Ones!
The most anticipated fantasy of 2021. In this world, girls are outcasts by blood and warriors by choice. Get ready for battle.
Sixteen-year-old Deka lives in fear and anticipation of the blood ceremony that will determine whether she will become a member of her village. Already different from everyone else because of her unnatural intuition, Deka prays for red blood so she can finally feel like she belongs.
But on the day of the ceremony, her blood runs gold, the color of impurity–and Deka knows she will face a consequence worse than death.
Then a mysterious woman comes to her with a choice: stay in the village and submit to her fate, or leave to fight for the emperor in an army of girls just like her. They are called alaki–near-immortals with rare gifts. And they are the only ones who can stop the empire's greatest threat.
Knowing the dangers that lie ahead yet yearning for acceptance, Deka decides to leave the only life she's ever known. But as she journeys to the capital to train for the biggest battle of her life, she will discover that the great walled city holds many surprises. Nothing and no one are quite what they seem to be–not even Deka herself.

YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?
I actually have two favorite characters. First is Belcalis, because she always gets to the heart of the matter and has no fear speaking the truth. The second is Britta, because she always lights up any scene she’s in.
YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?
The novel came first, and actually had a different title, Deathless. But then we changed it to The Gilded Ones.
YABC: What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?
Trying not to do any spoilers, but I’m most proud of the scene where Belcalis and Deka have an honest conversation about what it means to be a woman in their world. It was a very difficult scene to write emotionally, and I’m very happy with the way it came out.
YABC: Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?
Do not fear how long the story takes. Because I come from a screenwriting background, I’m used to counting how many pages it takes to get to a certain portion of the story. But novels take time and they develop in their own way, so I’m learning to give stories room to breathe.
YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?
Everything. Seriously everything. I think it’s simply gorgeous, and that the illustrator, Tara Josu, did an amazing job.
YABC: What was your favorite book in 2020?
I had two. This is My America by Kim Johnson, and The Black Kids by Christina Hammonds Reed.
YABC: What’s up next for you?
More books, hopefully!
YABC: What would you say is your superpower?
Discipline. I’m the type of writer that wakes up super early in the morning and always has the next project lined up. I’m always, always, always working.
YABC: Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?
The Yak Jones Foundation, which is an organization that focuses on literary for Sierra Leonean youth. I’m from Sierra Leone, born and raised, and I’m very lucky to have the education that I do.
Literacy rates in the country are dire, I think upwards of 75% of people or so are uneducated because the civil war, which lasted a decade, disrupted everything. Yak Jones does an amazing job of delivering books to the kids who need them most. I’ll be doing a drive with them later this month.
