Introducing Katharyn Blair, YABC's Author of the Week!!
Katharyn Blair is a novelist and screenwriter. She has her MFA in screenwriting and her MA in literature. She’s been a social media coordinator for several films at 20th Century Fox, an intern at her city’s Parks and Recreation Department, a gymnastics coach, and, most recently, a writing professor at Azusa Pacific University. UNCHOSEN is her second novel for young adults. Her debut novel, The Beckoning Shadow received two starred trade reviews and was the book of the month for Book Box Club, Shelf Love Crate, and Beacon Box.
She lives outside of Los Angeles with her family.
Katharyn Blair crafts a fiercely feminist fantasy with a horrifying curse, swoon-worthy sea captains, and the power of one girl to choose her own fate in this contemporary standalone adventure that's perfect for fans of The Fifth Wave and Seafire, and for anyone who has ever felt unchosen.
For Charlotte Holloway, the world ended twice.
The first was when her childhood crush, Dean, fell in love—with her older sister.
The second was when the Crimson, a curse spread through eye contact, turned the majority of humanity into flesh-eating monsters.
Neither end of the world changed Charlotte. She’s still in the shadows of her siblings. Her popular older sister, Harlow, now commands forces of survivors. And her talented younger sister, Vanessa, is the Chosen One—who, legend has it, can end the curse.
When their settlement is raided by those seeking the Chosen One, Charlotte makes a reckless decision to save Vanessa: she takes her place as prisoner.
The word spreads across the seven seas—the Chosen One has been found.
But when Dean’s life is threatened and a resistance looms on the horizon, the lie keeping Charlotte alive begins to unravel. She’ll have to break free, forge new bonds, and choose her own destiny if she has any hope of saving her sisters, her love, and maybe even the world.
Because sometimes the end is just a new beginning.

YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?
I feel like as an eldest sister, I understand Harlow. She has a special place in my heart.
YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?
This book was done far before the title and had many names before my wonderful team and Katherine Tegen Books suggested “Unchosen”, and we were all like – that’s it!
YABC: Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?
Rejection is just part of the journey – you will not avoid it. I think sometimes we think that if we’re ‘good enough’, or our ideas are ‘good enough’, we won’t be rejected. But that just isn’t true. The trick to success is to take rejections in stride. Keep going.
YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?
I love how this cover manages to capture the hope that Charlotte feels in the midst of everything else. I love how her head is tilted upwards, looking for the light.
YABC: What was your favorite book in 2020?
I finally read Madeline Miller’s CIRCE, and it was absolutely the perfect antidote to the absolutely bananas year.
YABC: What’s up next for you?
I am working on my first contemporary with Putnam! More to come on that soon ;)
YABC: Which character gave you the most trouble when writing your latest book?
Maddox Caine. You’ll see why – she’s quite the complicated individual.
YABC: Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?
I can’t choose! I equally love and hate them both. With drafting – it’s exciting and new… you’re discovering the plot and voice for the first time and it’s awesome! But, you know that you’re far from done. When you’re revising, it can feel tedious, but you know you’re close to finishing the book for real.
YABC: What would you say is your superpower?
I don’t really know when to quit. I can hear no a thousand times and still wake up ready to try again. I’m quite stubborn. That trait isn’t always great, but when it comes to writing? It’s a superpower for sure.
YABC: Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?
When my sister was sick, our community rallied and donated blood for her through the Red Cross. Even though she didn’t make it, my mom always talks about how that organization showed her how selfless people can be, and it helped give her hope. I support them every chance I can.

I really like the cover of the book, it definitely caught my attention. And the synopsis is even better, if I get my hands on the book I know I'll be hooked!
The color palette of the cover is so evocative! Also, I'm so glad to see more standalone fantasy YA novels coming out! I love a well-rounded singular story!
