Meet Grown!

Korey Fields is dead.

When Enchanted Jones wakes with blood on her hands and zero memory of the previous night, no one—the police and Korey’s fans included—has more questions than she does. All she really knows is that this isn't how things are supposed to be. Korey was Enchanted’s ticket to stardom.

Before there was a dead body, Enchanted was an aspiring singer, struggling with her tight knit family’s recent move to the suburbs while trying to find her place as the lone Black girl in high school. But then legendary R&B artist Korey Fields spots her at an audition. And suddenly her dream of being a professional singer takes flight.

Enchanted is dazzled by Korey’s luxurious life but soon her dream turns into a nightmare. Behind Korey’s charm and star power hides a dark side, one that wants to control her every move, with rage and consequences. Except now he’s dead and the police are at the door. Who killed Korey Fields?

All signs point to Enchanted.

~ Author Chat ~

YABC:  What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

This book is loosely inspired by the R. Kelly documentary and the criticism directed towards the victims, all young girls. I wanted to tell a story that shed lights on exactly how girls can be groomed and manipulated, erasing all doubt and victim blaming.

YABC:  Who is your favorite character in the book?

Enchanted is dear to my heart because I was that type of teen. Wise beyond her years, an old soul, motherly, but also very naive of the world and people’s hidden intentions.

YABC:  Which came first, the title or the novel?

The novel came first, with a completely different title. LOL! GROWN was my nickname for the book in my files. I have nicknames for all my book children, but this one stuck.

YABC:  Do you have a favorite writing snack?

Peanut Butter and strawberry jelly. My favorite all around meal, honestly.

YABC:  Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?

Craft is King. I don’t care what anyone says…if your story is GOOD, it’ll sell itself, it will be evergreen. Good writing never goes out of style. And lastly, you front list will sell your back list. Keep writing!

YABC:  What do you like most about the cover of the book?

The bamboo earing of course! It’s a staple in my wardrobe so I was excited to see it on the cover with a gorgeous brown skin girl.

YABC:  What’s up next for you?

My next book is a psychological horror, set in a haunted house called WHITE SMOKE and I’m SO excited about it. I’ve creeped myself out a few times.

YABC:  Are there any film adaptations, tv shows, audiobooks, or other adaptations in the works for this book?

Nothing I can talk about publicly yet but there’s stuff happening. You’ll see soon.

YABC:  Which character gave you the most trouble when writing your latest book?

Korey actually gave me the most trouble. I was trying to balance the feeling of first love with a creepy guy. I can still see the hesitation on the page.

YABC:  What would you say is your superpower?

Is superpower like a party trick? If so, I’m good an identifying a person’s first plot point in their work in progress without even reading their pages. That’s a weird author nerd party trick, but it’s what I got!
