Today on the YABC blog we are happy to sit down with

(Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand, & Jodi Meadows)

and talk with them about their upcoming release, My Lady Jane, which
releases on shelves on June 7th, 2016.

YABC: What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
B: Cynthia had the idea originally!
C: I learned about Jane Grey in my high school British history class, and I remember thinking even back then that her story had a terrible ending. I wanted to change it. And at the point we started writing MLJ I also really, really needed to write something that would make me laugh.
J: When Brodi and Cynthia asked if I wanted to write a novel with them, I just agreed. I didn’t even know what it was about. So I guess my inspiration was the desire to spend more time with two of my best friends?

YABC:  Who is your favorite character in the book?

J: Jane. Obviously.
C: Pet. She’s just so faithful and useful and also makes everyone uncomfortable. It’s awesome.
B: Um… Jane. Because she’s my wife. But not only because she’s my wife. But she is.

YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?

J: The novel, but the title seemed to grow organically from there. And by that, I mean that Cynthia said “here’s a title” and that was that.
C: I don’t remember coming up with the title. I do remember saying, out loud, multiple times, that this was going to be a hard book to find a title for, what with all the crown and queen and throne titles floating around. But it turned out to be an easy pick.

YABC: What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?

C: The end. We had to rewrite this a few times, and ended up changing important things about the ending, but I think for the final product we really nailed it.
J: Jane in the tower. That one was emotionally taxing, but I’m so proud of how it turned out.
B: The bear scene. Because how hard is it to kill a bear? Very hard, it turns out.

YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?

B: The look in Jane’s eyes. Slightly mischievous.
C: Pearls and lace. So pretty.
J: The ferret on the spine.

YABC: What’s up next for you?

B: Writing books together. And more books together. And then some books. And finally, books.
J: I’m also hoping there will be more fudge consumption in our future.
C: And more laughing!

YABC:  What would you say is your superpower?

B: Rewriting history. Changing historical “facts.”
C: Making beheading funny.
J: Getting into the mind of small, fuzzy creatures.

YABC: Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?

B: Girl Power!
C: I second that. We’re all about the feminism.
J: Thirded. That’s what I get for answering this one last. Thirding.

Meet,  !

Our group is made up of Brodi Ashton (author of the EVERNEATH series and DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY), Cynthia Hand (New York Timesbestselling author of the UNEARTHLY series and THE LAST TIME WE SAY GOODBYE), and Jodi Meadows (author of the INCARNATE and the ORPHAN QUEEN series). Between the three of us we’ve written thirteen novels, a bunch of novellas, a handful of short stories, and a couple of really bad poems, but this is the first time we’ve taken a stab at writing a book together. We’re friends. We’re writers. We’re fixing history by rewriting one sad story at a time.

How would you encourage middle grades students who wanted to learn about writing fiction?

Sounds like a more-fun-than-usual spin on an old tale; I’m excited to read it. Were there times when you 3 disagreed about what action a character should take? Does having 3 of you help when it comes to settling differences like that since there’s always “tie breaker” vote?

HI! This book sounds really interesting and I’m curious to know more about your experience with writing a novel with another person. I’ve heard about duos, but a trio is quite unique. What were some of the pros and cons of writing a book together?

Was it hard to write this book with THREE authors? Did you guys have to set up times where you would have to write and it was mandatory?

  13. Anonymous says:

Wow! Three of you! Did each of you research different topics and pool knowledge or, did you research together?

How do you handle disagreements when writing a book with 2 other people?
