her book, plus a giveaway!

YABC: What surprised you most while writing your latest book?

TARA SIMS: Honestly, every book I write is completely different. I think there’s a new surprise with each book, such as how characters develop, or what sort of research I need to do, or how I outline/plot. With Timekeeper, I think the surprise came after I finished the first draft and realized that there was a ton more worldbuilding to do. I had only scratched the surface of what the story and world would become after many rounds of revision.

YABC: If you could live in any fantasy world, which one would it be?

TARA SIM: I would love to live in the Shire in Middle Earth. Food and beautiful scenery, yes please.

Do you have a mantra that gets you through the drafting phase?

I actually really enjoy drafting, but sometimes it can be a chore. When I feel tantrum-y and like I don’t want to work even though I know I should, I tell myself to just start with a few words—which usually sprawls into a few hundred, and maybe a couple thousand. Basically, it’s my own swear word-riddled version of “get your butt in the chair and write.”

4. What is your favorite hobby when you’re not writing?

Catching up on my TBR, Netflix, movies, video games, going out to eat.

5. Which character gave you the most trouble when writing your latest book?

When writing Timekeeper, the character who gave me the most trouble was Daphne. I first wrote her in a very specific way that didn’t feel organic at all—she felt more like a placeholder character until I could understand what her personality and motivations were. Thankfully, when I did discover what her personality and motivations were, I rewrote her character to reflect that, and now she’s one of my favorites.

6. Do you enjoy writing to music? If so, do you have a go-to playlist?

I love writing to music. In fact, I can’t write in silence unless I’m writing a very, very intense scene. Some of my go-to music choices are my 10+ hour long classical music playlist, Lindsey Stirling, video game soundtracks (Final Fantasy XIII and Assassin’s Creed primarily), and music that I’ve listened to so many times that it becomes white noise.

7. Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?
I donate to the ASPCA every year. I adore animals, and I want to help them in any way I can.

 8. What’s a book that you’ve read recently that you would recommend to your readers?

Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo. Such an amazing duology. Also And I Darken by Kiersten White, and anything by Victoria Schwab.

9. Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?

Drafting! I know a lot of people despise drafting, but I despise revision. The process of creating something and playing with words/images/emotions is so amazing. When it’s going right, anyway; there are times when it’s the most difficult thing ever, but those moments when it clicks are wonderful.

10. What would you say is your superpower?

Having straight bangs.

Meet Tara Sim!

Tara Sim can typically be found wandering the wilds of the Bay Area in California. When she’s not chasing cats or lurking in bookstores, she writes books about magic, clocks, and explosives. Timekeeper is her debut novel..

Meet Timekeeper!

Two o’clock was missing. In an alternate Victorian world controlled by clock towers, a damaged clock can fracture time–and a destroyed one can stop it completely. It’s a truth that seventeen-year-old clock mechanic Danny Hart knows all too well; his father has been trapped in a Stopped town east of London for three years. Though Danny is a prodigy who can repair not only clockwork, but the very fabric of time, his fixation with staging a rescue is quickly becoming a concern to his superiors. And so they assign him to Enfield, a town where the tower seems to be forever plagued with problems. Danny’s new apprentice both annoys and intrigues him, and though the boy is eager to work, he maintains a secretive distance. Danny soon discovers why: he is the tower’s clock spirit, a mythical being that oversees Enfield’s time. Though the boys are drawn together by their loneliness, Danny knows falling in love with a clock spirit is forbidden, and means risking everything he’s fought to achieve. But when a series of bombings at nearby towers threaten to Stop more cities, Danny must race to prevent Enfield from becoming the next target or he’ll not only lose his father, but the boy he loves, forever. The stunning first novel in a new trilogy by debut author Tara Sim, Timekeeper is perfect for fans of Cassandra Clare and Victoria Schwab.
