Meet We Are The Wildcats!
A toxic coach finds himself outplayed by the high school girls on his team in this deeply suspenseful novel, which unspools over twenty-four hours through six diverse perspectives.
Tomorrow, the Wildcat varsity field hockey squad will play the first game of their new season. But at tonight’s team sleepover, the girls are all about forging the bonds of trust, loyalty, and friendship necessary to win.
Everything hinges on the midnight initiation ceremony—a beloved tradition and the only facet of being a Wildcat that the girls control. Until now.
Coach—a handsome former college player revered and feared in equal measure—changes the plan and spins his team on a new adventure. One where they take a rival team’s mascot for a joyride, crash a party in their pajamas, break into the high school for the perfect picture.
But as the girls slip out of their comfort zone, so do some long-held secrets. And just how far they’re willing to go for their team takes them all—especially Coach—by surprise.
A testament to the strength and resilience of modern teenage girls, We Are the Wildcats will have readers cheering.

YABC: What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
I had stumbled across an article in the newspaper about the male coach of a high school girls soccer team. He’d been fired for “inappropriate conduct” relating to a team sleepover, because he was texting the girls throughout the night and giving them instructions and challenges to accomplish, some of which bordered on hazing. But his dismissal tore the team apart because while some girls felt he deserved to be fired, others were very against it.
YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?
When you have six rotating points of view, it’s hard to pick a favorite! But I will say that I had the most fun writing Coach because I’ve never had someone like him appear in a book before.
YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?
The title! Which never happens to me!
YABC: What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?
I love the initiation tradition that takes place between the girls at midnight. It’s absolutely the anthesis of hazing, which I’m guessing plays against most readers’ expectations. For the girls, this night has always been about positivity, about inclusion, about celebration…until Coach takes it away from them.
YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?
I love the illustration. The girls are having a wild night out, fun and celebratory, with warmth and love and friendship clearly present between them. I also like what the illustrator did with perspective, where she has one of the illustrated girls looking backward at the reader, making them feel like they’re being included. I can almost hear her shouting out, “Catch up”!
YABC: Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or revising?
REVISING! I love to tweak and change and play and fuss with a draft and make it work the way I want it to. But the initial drafting process I find super exhausting and frustrating.
YABC: What was your favorite book in 2019?
On the recommendation of my friend Morgan Matson, I started reading The Penderwicks. It’s sooooo lovely, so tender and cozy and funny and smart. Like a modern day Little Women, with a group of four sisters.
YABC: What’s up next for you?
I’m working on my next book with Simon and Schuster. It hasn’t been officially announced yet, and so I don’t want to say too much about it, but it’s unlike anything I’ve ever written before.

I love this cover and think it's so interesting that only one girl is looking at the reader. Also I love suspense and this seems like it's extremely suspenseful!
The cover is eye-catching with bold colors. The synopsis is very interesting. I really liked The Last Boy and Girl in the World by this author and this one looks great.
