~ Interview ~

YABC:  What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

I got stuck in a Florida airport while trying to make my way back to New York City. At one point, I thought I saw a recent ex of mine headed my way. (I actually ducked.) It wasn’t him, but I realized it would have made for a much better story if it had been him. I wound up brainstorming, and by the time I finally made it home, I knew I had my next book idea!

YABC:   Who is your favorite character in the book?

I like them all for different reasons! I feel like I got to spend the most time with Sari and Zev, so they have a special place in my heart. I also love Sari’s family, as well as her best friend, Trina! However, the two guys, Fitz and Dylan, who went along on the travel adventures were so fun to write! I absolutely adore them. I definitely would love to revisit them at some point in time!

YABC:   Which came first, the title or the novel?

The book came first. My editor, Holly, actually came up with the title. We had a brainstorming session along with the director of Swoon Reads, and we’d been throwing a lot of different titles around—and liked the idea of a list. We knew we were close, but not quite there—until Holly said Airports, Exes, and Other Things I’m Over, and we had that ‘yes!’ moment!

YABC:  What do you like most about the cover of the book?

I think the cover is beautiful, and I love the lettering. I think Airports, Exes, and Other Things I’m Over is such a fun title, and the cover real highlights it. Pink is also one of my favorite colors, so that was an added bonus!

YABC:  What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2018?

Picking just one is so hard—there’s so many I can’t wait to read! ‘What If It’s Us’ by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera is definitely a book I can’t wait to get my hands on!

YABC:   What’s up next for you?

I’m working on a book called Finding Mr. Better-Than-You. It’s about a girl who gets dumped at the beginning of senior year and is determined to find someone better than her ex.

YABC:  Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?

It depends what point of the process I’m in. When I’m drafting, I think revising is so much easier and can’t wait to get there, and when I’m revising, I think how much easier it is to be drafting.

YABC:  Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?

There are several! I think giving back is very important. I try to do what I can, and some of the places I support include First Book, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), the UJA (I sit on a couple of boards there), and the American Heart Association.
