Meet Renee Ahdieh!

New York Times bestselling author Renée Ahdieh returns with a sumptuous, sultry and romantic new series set in 19th century New Orleans where vampires hide in plain sight.

In 1872, New Orleans is a city ruled by the dead. But to seventeen-year-old Celine Rousseau, New Orleans provides her a refuge after she's forced to flee her life as a dressmaker in Paris. Taken in by the sisters of the Ursuline convent along with six other girls, Celine quickly becomes enamored with the vibrant city from the music to the food to the soirées and—especially—to the danger. She soon becomes embroiled in the city's glitzy underworld, known as La Cour des Lions, after catching the eye of the group's leader, the enigmatic Sébastien Saint Germain. When the body of one of the girls from the convent is found in the lair of La Cour des Lions, Celine battles her attraction to him and suspicions about Sébastien's guilt along with the shame of her own horrible secret.

When more bodies are discovered, each crime more gruesome than the last, Celine and New Orleans become gripped by the terror of a serial killer on the loose—one Celine is sure has set her in his sights . . . and who may even be the young man who has stolen her heart. As the murders continue to go unsolved, Celine takes matters into her own hands and soon uncovers something even more shocking: an age-old feud from the darkest creatures of the underworld reveals a truth about Celine she always suspected simmered just beneath the surface.

At once a sultry romance and a thrilling murder mystery, master storyteller Renée Ahdieh embarks on her most potent fantasy series yet: The Beautiful.

~ Author Chat ~

YABC:  As we learn soon after meeting him, Michael is a young detective and yet commands a lot of respect. He has also faced challenges due to the time period and his race/ethnicity. He is quite clever and determined, which serves him well in his job. What do you think Michael would say is his defining quality and why? What would Celine and/or Bastien say?

I think Michael would say his determination is his defining quality. Because of the difficulties he faced in life, it was important that he not let anyone distract or dissuade him from achieving his goals. Celine and Bastien would probably say Michael’s defining quality is how skilled he is at observation, even though his attention to detail has caused problems for them on more than one occasion!

YABC:  Michael also reveals some past friendships, which seem surprising at first glance. What qualities do you think Michael seeks in friends and/or romantic partners?

Michael is the kind of young man who looks for challenges. He likes to buck tradition and find his own path. I believe he would look for a similar mindset in any friend or romantic partner.

YABC:  If Michael were an animal, which one would he be and why?

I would have to say a lone wolf. He’s clever and shrewd, and he’s not afraid of taking the difficult path, even if it means he will walk it alone.

YABC:  What inspired Michael's character (someone in real life, another book, etc.)? Did you do research for his character? If so, what was the strangest thing you researched?

I’ve always loved mysteries, and some of my favorites involve Sherlock Holmes. I definitely gave some hat-tips to that famous detective, but I’m also lucky to have some brilliant friends around me, who continue to inspire me with their cleverness.

YABC:  If Michael could travel to any time in the past or present, which one do you think you he would choose and why?

I think Michael loves the time and place he is in because he’s carved a space for himself in it, and he’s not looking to the world to grant him any favors.
