Meet Reaper Of Souls!

After so many years yearning for the gift of magic, Arrah has the one thing she’s always wanted—but it came at too steep a price. Now the last surviving witchdoctor, she’s been left to pick up the shattered pieces of a family that betrayed her, a kingdom plunged into chaos, and a love that can never be.

While Arrah returns to the tribal lands to search for survivors of the demons’ attack, her beloved Rudjek hunts down the remnants of the demon army—and uncovers a plot that would destroy what’s left of their world.

The Demon King wants Arrah, and if she and Rudjek can’t unravel his schemes, he will destroy everything, and everyone, standing in his way.

Set in a richly imagined world inspired by whispered tales of voodoo and folk magic, the Kingdom of Souls trilogy has been optioned for film by Michael B. Jordan and his Warner Bros. production company, Outlier Society.

~ Author Chat ~

YABC:  Do you have a favorite writing snack?

Popcorn! Who can resist the crunch?

YABC:  What do you like most about the cover of the book?

I love that for Reaper of Souls, the artist Adeyemi Adegbesan did a fantastic job incorporating elements from the text. The lion's head, the ram's head, the snake, and the cracked throne are all very symbolic and true to the book.

YABC:  What’s on your TBR pile?

In the Young Adult space, Wings of Ebonyby J.Elle is at the top of my pile. I'm also excited to read The Gilded Onesby Namina Forna and A Psalm of Storms and Silence (A Song of Wraiths and Ruin #2) by Roseanne A. Brown. For Middle Grade, I'm excited for Amari and the Night Brothers by B.B. Alston.

YABC:  What’s a book you’ve recently read and loved?

I recently read and loved Raybearerby Jordan Ifueko. It was such a fun read filled with magic, complex characters, and palace intrigue.

YABC:  What’s up next for you?

I'm currently working on the third book in the Kingdom of Soulsseries. Our main character, Arrah, had to make an impossible choice at the end of Reaper of Souls, and now she's got to deal with the repercussions. She is the only one who stands between the orishas and the Demon King, who's out for retribution.

YABC:  Are there any film adaptations, tv shows, audiobooks, or other adaptations in the works for this book?

Film rights for Kingdom of Souls sold to Warner Bros. with Michael B. Jordan (“Black Panther”) producing and Misan Sagay (“Belle”) writing the screenplay. Both Kingdom of Souls and the sequel, Reaper of Souls, are narrated by the award-winning Robin Miles. Miles has narrated works by Roxane Gay, Bell hooks, and N. K. Jemisin, among many others.

YABC:  Which was the most difficult or emotional scene to narrate?

Gosh, so many. Perhaps the most difficult are the scenes of revelations when Arrah discovers aspects of herself that scare her, but she also can't pretend them away. She has to confront them in all their sometimes ugly glory.

YABC:  Which character gave you the most trouble when writing your latest book?

I can't name the character without giving away a spoiler, but let's say it's definitely hard to balance a character with conflicting motivations.

YABC:  Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?

Revising! But also, my opinion of that shifts depending on how long I've been working on a project. Sometimes when you've been revising for months, all you want to do is start on something fresh.

YABC:  What would you say is your superpower?

It depends on the day, but I would say despite many ups and downs, I always have a streak of optimism that keeps me pushing ahead.
