Meet Only The Pretty Lies!
A love story about breaking painful legacies.
Convention doesn’t carry much weight in Alder Creek. It doesn’t in Amoris Westmore’s family either. Daughter of a massage therapist and a pothead artist, inheritor of her grandmother’s vinyl collection, and blissfully entering her senior year in high school, Amoris never wants to leave her progressive hometown. Why should she?
Everything changes when Jamison Rush moves in next door. Jamison was Amoris’s first crush, and their last goodbye still stings. But Jamison stirs more than bittersweet memories. One of the few Black students in Alder Creek, Jamison sees Amoris’s idyllic town through different eyes. He encourages Amoris to look a little closer, too. When Jamison discovers a racist mural at Alder Creek High, Amoris’s worldview is turned upside down.
Now Amoris must decide where she stands and whom she stands by, threatening her love for the boy who stole her heart years ago. Maybe Alder Creek isn’t the town Amoris thinks it is. She’s certainly no longer the girl she used to be.
~ Author Chat ~
YABC: What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
ONLY THE PRETTY LIES is inspired by a true story. My editor shared with me an experience his daughter had in her junior high around the discovery of a racist mural, which had been hanging in the school for years, its racist nature unnoticed. The story sat with me for months. I was caught by how the exposure of the mural unearthed and revealed deep seeded issues within this ostensibly open-minded community.
YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?
This question is always so hard. Each character, even the villains, have characteristics I find important and even endearing. But, if I had to say, my favorite is Jamison. Jamison’s passion, his resolve, his pain, and his love inspire me to be a better person.
YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?
I had written the beginning of the novel when the title came to me. The title, ONLY THE PRETTY LIES, is inspired from the Joni Mitchell song “The Last Time I Saw Richard”. In essence, it’s about the lies we tell ourselves and others to avoid looking at the hard truth. Amoris’s journey through the novel is exactly that.
YABC: What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?
There’s a chapter past the midpoint of the novel called “Try and Try Again.” The chapter is one scene long, between Amoris and her school counselor, Lori, about what it means to truly love someone. I am most proud of that scene. Writing it was revelatory. I was changed from it.
YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?
I love the white-washed lettering of the title. It’s great symbolism.
YABC: What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2021?
I am a huge Taylor Jenkins Reid fan. THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO is one of my favorite books. I can’t wait for her next release, MALIBU RISING.
YABC: Which character gave you the most trouble when writing your latest book?
The main character, Amoris, gave me the most trouble. Moving her through the story, through her character’s discoveries at an honest pace was so important. She loves Jamison so much and yet she keeps thwarting their love from growing because she won’t open her eyes and grow… until she does. And then all hell breaks loose.
YABC: Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?
Each have their beautiful moments. I really enjoy the “second draft” after the initial manuscript is complete, but rough. It combines both drafting and revising. The structure is there, but many times I find I erase whole scenes and am right back into drafting the story again.
YABC: What’s up next for you?
I’m currently working on my next release, THE REIMAGINING OF JUNE MERRIWEATHER, which should be out in late 2022/early2023. The quick pitch: After her brother’s death, June Merriweather buys a one-way ticket to Scotland and assumes a new life. But just as she begins to heal, her past catches up with her. Caught between new love and old affections, June must decide who she wants to be before her time runs out in Scotland. But making that decision means confronting her brother’s death and the family secrets she desperately wants to keep hidden.
