Read on for more about Rebecca and her book, plus a giveaway!
Meet Rebecca Schaeffer!
Rebecca Schaeffer was born and raised in the Canadian prairies. Her itchy feet took her far from home. You can find her sitting in a cafe on the other side of the world, writing about villains, antiheroes, and morally ambiguous characters. She is the author of Not Even Bones, the first in a dark YA fantasy trilogy.
Meet When Villains Rise!
Dexter meets Victoria Schwab in this dark and compelling fantasy about a girl who is determined to take down the black market once and for all in the conclusion to the trilogy that started with the critically acclaimed Not Even Bones.
Nita finally has Fabricio, the boy who betrayed her to the black market, within her grasp. But when proof that Kovit’s a zannie—a monster who eats pain in order to survive—is leaked to the world, Nita must reevalute her plans.
With enemies closing in on all sides, the only way out is for Nita and Kovit to take on the most dangerous man in the world: Fabricio’s father. He protects the secrets of the monsters who run the black market. Stealing those secrets could be the one thing that stands between Nita and Kovit and certain death in the thrilling conclusion to the trilogy that began with the critically acclaimed Not Even Bones.

YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?
Ohh, this is hard. I love all my characters a lot, but I think for this book, I really loved writing Fabricio. He’s been a bit of a mystery for so much of the series and it was really satisfying to finally put him properly on paper and showcase who he really is and all the interesting secrets tangled within. He’s also just a fun character to write.
YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?
The novel. Titles are the last thing I do, because as I write the novel, it shifts and changes, and sometimes the book I end with isn’t what I thought I was going to write when I started. So titles are always the last thing decided.
YABC: Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?
This industry will suck the joy out of creating like a twisted vampire, and you can’t even stake it and turn it to dust. So it’s important to keep the love of creating alive, and never let the bad bits overwhelm the good things.
YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?
I really like the aesthetic of it, red and black, with red type, which complements the red of the blood on Nita’s scalpel and Kovit’s switchblade. I also like how the crossed blades are a great callback to the previous book’s covers.
YABC: What’s on your TBR pile?
There’s a lot on my TBR right now, but right now I’m particularly looking forward to reading Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko and Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno Garcia.
YABC: What’s a book you’ve recently read and loved?
I recently finished The Good Luck Girls by Charlotte Nicole Davis and LOVED it. Complicated girls struggling with ugly pasts, monsters, fantasy world inspired by the old west, and evil magic tattoos. What’s not to love?
YABC: Are there any film adaptations, tv shows, audiobooks, or other adaptations in the works for this book?
The audiobooks are all available and narrated by the wonderful Almarie Guerra! There’s also an amazing adaption of the book on Webtoon, with truly incredible art, which you can read for free here: https://www.webtoons.com/en/thriller/not-even-bones/list?title_no=1756
YABC: Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or revising?
I really enjoy revising second round, when you know EXACTLY what needs to be changed, and can see the shape of the book as it will be, and know it’s going to be GOOD.
YABC: What would you say is your superpower?
Time management. I’m very efficient and consistent. I’m good at getting them done, and getting them done in time XD
