Meet Rayya Deeb!

Rayya Deeb is a Virginia Tech Hokie, born in London, England and raised in Northern Virginia. She lives in Southern California with her husband and two daughters. Rayya has worked in television production and film development, but her true passion is writing. She has spent over a decade screenwriting, collaborating with some seriously incredible, world-renowned directors, actors and top-notch producers. In 2016 her debut novel, Seneca Rebel (ATM Publishing/No Mimes Media), was published. Her latest, Seneca Element (12/12/19- Mediology/No Mimes Media), is the second book in The Seneca Society series. Rayya loves L.A. street tacos, 90's hip-hop, obscure Alan Watts lectures, exploring the globe, painting, and breaking bread with family & friends. She spends an absurd amount of time thinking about all things culinary, but considers it well worth it.

Meet Seneca Element!

If you knew that creating singularity between your mind and machine would open Pandora’s Box would you do it?

Not even teen math-genius, Doro Campbell, could have known what she was getting herself into when she made the choice to get an implant connecting her brain to her computer. But when she finds her own existence at the center of a fight for power that runs deep inside the near-future, secret society that is Seneca, Doro realizes her mind may no longer be under her own jurisdiction.

In this breakneck race to find her dad and save the planet, Doro must choose between trusting her inner self or technology. Amidst the perils of a brutal technological warfare, and navigating the ups and downs of her first love, can Doro find the way to save herself… and the fate of the world?

YABC:  What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

The inspiration for this book has been quite an evolution from the first. While they are a part of the same process, what first started as a curiosity for Ray Kurzweil's futurist predictions of singularity, has developed into a deep-rooted passion for exploring the heart of who we are and the choices we make in this evolving, high-tech, hectic and uncertain world. My inspiration comes from many places and hopefully it will all shine through in this story and inspire others.

YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?

I do enjoy writing all of the characters and playing with the relationships between them, but my favorite is Doro. She's a rebel with a sense of curiosity and a huge heart, but of course she's got flaws and internal struggles, too, like we all do. I think that is a huge part of the heroine's journey, and one that I am compelled to examine.

YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?

Chris Thompson at Lucky Ember Design has been involved with Seneca since the beginning. His understanding of this near-future world, the characters and story is perfectly echoed in the cover of Seneca Element. On top of that, there is some pretty unique stuff going on with the cover design that I can't say I have ever seen happen before... I am wondering if any of your readers can figure it out. I hope so!

YABC: What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2020?

What was your favorite book in 2019? It was actually a book that was recommended to me by a barista named Brice at Longevity Coffee in Thousand Oaks, CA. Letting Go by David R. Hawkins didn't come out in 2019, but this summer is when I read it. My husband then also read it and ordered all the rest of Hawkins' books. Reading his books has been an incredibly I (I don't mean eye) opening, mind-blowing experience that has lead to a humbling and joyful awakening in my life.

YABC: What’s up next for you?

I am writing book three in the Seneca Society Series and having so much fun with it! Seneca Element was quite challenging as I found my own spiritual journey paralleling the heart of the story. But with this third one I am in a whole new place and I am very excited about where it is going.

YABC: Is there anything that you would like to add?

Just how much gratitude I have for the people who enrich my life and/or contributed to this book coming to fruition. They are the reasons this is even possible and I hope if you read the books you will check out the acknowledgements.

YABC: Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?

They both have their ups and downs. I absolutely live to break story ideas and flush it all out, but getting stuck can be pretty darn painful. Meanwhile, the edit is a long, winding road and I have to stay at it without the final destination in sight. But, on the bright side, this time around on Seneca Element, I got to sit down and run some line edits and fine tune with my friend, Fallon Ureda. We had a great time having lunch together and bouncing ideas for different word choices. We had lots of laughs.

YABC: What would you say is your superpower?

My imagination because it can take me anywhere. It's a funny thing because our minds often keep us constrained to the space inside our skin, but imagination feels to me to be a union between brain function and something beyond our physical bodies. That "something" is not to be ignored and it is the reason I enjoy the creative process unlike anything else.

YABC: Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?

I appreciate the work of the UNHCR and everyone dedicated to the betterment of the lives of refugees across the globe. It's a beautiful thing to put compassion into action. This, to me, is love, and is a hopeful reminder for us all that love is a verb and as Gandhi said, "Where there is love, there is life."
