Meet The Sky Above Us!

From the author of We Speak in Storms comes a twisty, psychological thriller about three friends searching for the truth in the aftermath of a plane crash.

The morning after their senior year beach party, Izzy, Cass, and Janie are woken by a thundering overhead. Then they and their classmates watch in shock as a plane crashes into the water. When the passengers are finally recovered, they are identified as Izzy's twin brother, Israel, Cass's ex-boyfriend, Shane, and Janie's best friend, Nate. But Izzy can feel when her brother is in pain, and she knows he's not really dead. So she, Cass, and Janie set out to discover what actually happened that day--and why the boys were on the plane.

Told in alternating timelines and points of view, this powerful and captivating novel follows the three boys in the weeks leading up to that fateful flight, and the girls they left behind as they try to piece together the truth about the boys they loved and thought they knew. A spellbinding story about the ripple effects of tragedy, the questions we leave unanswered, and the enduring power of friendship.

~ Author Chat ~

YABC:  What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

In my experience, one of the hardest things about losing someone is the whys and what-ifs that the survivors are left with. Why did the person get in the car that day? Why did they have to die instead of me? What if I’d gone to see them instead of going on a vacation? What if I’d called more? I wanted to write a novel about what it’s like to survive something tragic and sudden; to live with those questions and be driven to find answers; and to cope with the understanding that there may be none.

YABC:  Who is your favorite character in the book?

Izzy. She’s often too blunt, so people perceive her as sharp or cruel. But I love her fearlessness and willingness to go to the ends of the earth for those she holds dear.

YABC:  Which came first, the title or the novel?

The novel. This title actually comes from a line at the very end of the book: “I gesture at the sky above us, the ocean at our feet, the place where the boys left this life and became something new.” When I’d written a full draft, I made a list of possible titles and ran them by my beta readers. The Sky Above Us was an easy favorite.

YABC:  Do you have a favorite writing snack?

I tend to write early in the mornings, and for the sake of practicality, I often munch on dry cereal. It’s fast and doesn’t get your keyboard dirty.

YABC:  What do you like most about the cover of the book?

I love that the title “falls” down the page and that the sky and water seem to blend into each other, reflecting that titular line that I mentioned above. And I especially love that the three girls are huddled together. I think their sadness, as well as the way they’ve come to rely on each other, is apparent in that image.

YABC:  What’s up next for you?

I recently completed the first draft of my third novel, The Wolves Are Watching. It’s part drama, part folklore, and part mystery, and I’m excited to dig in with my editor in the coming weeks.

YABC:  Are there any film adaptations, tv shows, audiobooks, or other adaptations in the works for this book?

There will be an audio edition via Recorded Books.

YABC:  Which character gave you the most trouble when writing your latest book?

I had the hardest time with Nate. It was challenging for me emotionally to be immersed in his journey because of his depression and self-hating thoughts. Writing him meant tapping into some memories of difficult times I’ve faced personally and thought patterns I work to avoid. I reached out to friends and mental health professionals and went through many iterations trying to get him right.

YABC:  What would you say is your superpower?

Organization. Imagine all the spreadsheets I could conjure, all the closet systems I’d invent, all the spaces I’d save!

YABC:  Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?

My mom has been battling melanoma for several years now, and MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston has been fighting right alongside her. I’m grateful for the research they do, and the care they take of all their patients, but especially my mom.
