Meet Michael Moreci!

Michael Moreci is a comics author and novelist. His current comic series, Wasted Space, has been hailed as one of the best comics of 2018; it comes on the heels of Moreci’s other hit sci-fi series, Roche Limit, which Paste Magazine dubbed “one of the 50 best sci-fi comics of all-time.” Moreci has also written canonical comics for Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Archie, and Planet of the Apes. Other original titles include Curse, Burning Fields, Hoax Hunters, and the forthcoming Archangel 8. His debut novel, Black Star Renegades--a space adventure in the spirit of Star Wars—was released in 2018 and nominated for an Audie Award. Its sequel, We Are Mayhem, was released in April 2019.

Meet We Are Mayhem!

The second entry in the Star Wars-inspired series that Nerdist calls "the next big thing."

Though the ragtag group of misfits known as the Black Star Renegades won a decisive battle by destroying Ga Halle’s War Hammer, the war is far from over. In response to losing the crown jewel of its fleet, the evil Praxis empire has vengefully reinforced its tyranny across the galaxy--but its rule won't be had so easily. Led by hotshot pilot Kira Sen, a growing rebel force stands in the way of Praxis’s might. Not only do they possess the will to fight for galactic freedom, they also possess the ultimate ace in the hole: The mythical Rokura, the most powerful weapon ever known.

Too bad Cade Sura hasn’t figured out to use it.

As Kira wages an increasingly bloody war against Praxis, Cade is left with only once choice: With Ga Halle scouring every star system for the coveted weapon, Cade embarks on a dangerous mission into uncharted space to discover the Rokura’s origins. Only then can he learn how it can be wielded. Because if he doesn’t, all hope for the galaxy might be lost.

~ Author Chat ~

YABC:  Who is your favorite character in the book?

MM: Kira, for sure. She's brash, she's bold, she's funny, and she doesn't fit into the world in the way she's expected to. I love characters who butt heads against everything because the world doesn't know what to do with them. I feel like that so much of the time, and this is Kira, thoroughly. She's a great character to write.

YABC:  Which came first, the title or the novel?

MM: The novel. I'm very, very bad at writing titles.

YABC:  What do you like most about the cover of the book?

MM: Honestly, all of it. Wayne Haag, the cover artist, is SO great. For these two books--We Are Mayhem and its predecessor, Black Star Renegades--we wanted the cover to have a vintage, pulpy, sci-fi feel, and Wayne gave us that and more. The covers are like the book itself--big, action-packed, and tons of fun.

YABC:  What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2019?

MM: It actually happened already! Mike Chen released Here and Now and Then in January, and it was wonderful. There's a new Stephen King, and I'm always ready for that. And I believe Brandon Sanderson's sequel to Skyward is also in 2019? Oh! And Claudia Gray's Master and Apprentice Star Wars book. She is the best.

YABC:  What’s up next for you?

MM: Well, it feels like everything. I'm a busy guy. I'm continuing to write my sci-fi comic Wasted Space, which is an ongoing series. I'm writing a few new horror projects, which I'm very excited about--I'm thrilled to be getting back into that world. One of those projects is with a screenwriter and director I really admire. I'm working on a new novel, slowly but surely, and I have a new secret Star Wars project that's supposed to get underway soon. So, busy days!

YABC:  Which was the most difficult or emotional scene to narrate?

MM: There's a scene with Kira and her mom that breaks my heart. I can't give details without spoiling anything, but...oooof. That was tough to write.

YABC:  Which character gave you the most trouble when writing your latest book?

MM: I would say Cade, strangely. I can write sarcastic misfits all day long, and Cade is very much a sarcastic misfit. What's hard, though, is adding depth to that. And I wanted, in this sequel, to give Cade more depth. It was difficult to balance those two things, to get that tone right and know when to lean into one or the other. I like a good challenge, though, so as frustrating as it was at times, it was also a good experience.

YABC:  Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?

MM: Drafting, easily. I love the discovery of writing a story--it's kind of like reading a book/watching a movie for the first time, where there's all this world to explore and surprises to be had. Revising is just...work. A lot of work.

YABC:  What would you say is your superpower?

MM: Well, I'm a parent of two young boys, and I'm always busy with both parenting and writing, so my superpower seems to be not needing sleep.
