Meet Zin Mignon and the Secret of the Pickled Pigs Feet!
11 year old genius Chef Zin Mignon is in a horrific pickle. He’s been kidnapped from Le Cordon Bleu cooking school in Paris by the mysterious Mustard Monks and spirited away to their ultra-remote mountaintop abbey. In time, he’ll be able to take their daunting Test. If he passes, he may join their secret Order and achieve the culinary success he’s always dreamed of. If he fails….
The tale of Zin Mignon begins at the bottom of a jar of pickled pigs’ feet in his father’s pathetic Brooklyn deli. A secret note sets him on a world-spinning adventure that takes him through the alleys of the homeless to the tables of billionaires, to discover who he really is and the greatness for which he is destined. As he sets the culinary world on fire, a mix of treacherous rivals feasts on the chance to make his dreams go up in smoke.
In the wildly appetizing first book of the Zin Mignon series, with the help of his family and friends, Zin is off to honor the solemn promise he made to his dad and to learn the incredible secret of his family legacy. With humor, amazing exploits and heartfelt compassion, Zin uses food and his kitchen to build a recipe that will lead him to his true identity. Can he cut the mustard, or is it all just pie in the sky?

YABC: What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
The ZIN MIGNON Series is a result of the family dynamics of our home. As a writer and dad, you always want your family involved in your work as much as possible. My wife and three kids have always loved food and cooking. We have a daughter --Sidney --who uses a wheelchair and as she grew up, she loved to watch the colorful chefs on Food Network. Emeril, Giada, Bobby Flay. Of course we'd watch with her. As a writer, you're always looking for new ideas and one day Sidney and I were watching a cooking show and it hit me, How come there's not a funny series about a kid cook?? So many people are captivated by the food phenomenon on TV, but there's a gap in that there are no books about chefs, and especially a young genius chef. The idea for a phenom kid-cook popped into my head, and now there's 3 wonderful books, and at least 2 more to come.
YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?
While ZIN is the mastermind 13 year-old chef, I love Nacho, his humble dishwasher and the narrator. Zin serves billionaires and celebrities, so Nacho gives perspective to all the sizzle.
YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?
The book definitely came first. A wise New York editor with more young-reader experience than me suggested the tone of the title.
YABC: Do you have a favorite writing snack?
ZIN is a Series about food and cooking so it's easy to let the snacks get out of hand but I do steal my kids' Peanut M&M's.
YABC: Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?
That's easy. Come up with the ending FIRST! So you know where you're going. I can't fathom writing something without knowing what will happen at the very end. BTW, each ZIN book has a terrific ending, and the entire series (what is the secret to ZIN's family past) has a truly wonderful conclusion.
YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?
I like ZIN's expression and posture. He's young, clever, confident, something up his sleeve.
YABC: What’s on your TBR pile?
Larry McMurtry's Last Picture Show; and I love history so I have The Tsarina's Lost Treasure, about a shipwreck with Catherine the Great's secret cargo.
YABC: What’s a book you’ve recently read and loved?
Well, I was in the mood for a western (I'm here in Arizona) so I read Larry McMurtry's 'quadrology', (4 books) keyed around Lonesome Dove. If you like Westerns, this is for you. 3200 pages in total and I sure didn't want it to end.
YABC: What’s up next for you?
I wrote a novel called CHIP ROCK and the FAT OLD FART. It took me over 35 years to write and it's my opus. It's about a kid (Chip) who ages out of a crummy orphanage in a decrepit SoCal beach town. As he searches for a respectable place in the world, he falls under the spell of a 50-something crusty old butcher. It's a coming-of-age story for Chip, and coming-of-old-age for the butcher. Powerful. I'm very proud of it. So right now, I'm writing it's sequel, called CHIP ROCK and THE CATALINA KID. The plot has been in my head for 40 years. When it's finished, no one is gonna be disappointed. After that, it's on to ZIN #4.
YABC: Are there any film adaptations, tv shows, audiobooks, or other adaptations in the works for this book?
People keep asking for Audiobooks so I'm gonna have to get those going. People always tell me ZIN is movie material!
YABC: Which was the most difficult or emotional scene to narrate?
ZIN and his parents, living in poverty in Brooklyn, before ZIN hits the big-time.
YABC: Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?
Drafting!! Revisions are so difficult for me. After the initial creative process, revising feels like homework!
YABC: What would you say is your superpower?
Simple: I have a great wife and family.
YABC: Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?
Our daughter attends a special day program in Scottsdale AZ called Cortney's Place. It's a wonderfully creative place for kids and adults with special needs. I swear, the kindest and most giving people in the world work there, and do such a fabulous job with a very challenging population. They deserve all the support and gratitude we can give.

The cover of this book is absolutely brilliant. From the cartoon type illustrations to the way Zin is standing and even the expression on his face, all of these elements combine to create a title that middle grade readers will not be able to resist.
The synopsis gives just enough information to potential readers to make the book utterly irresistible. I for see big things for this new series.
