Meet The Queen's Assassin!

Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Red Queen, this is the first novel in a sweeping YA fantasy-romance duet about a deadly assassin, his mysterious apprentice, and the country they are sworn to protect from #1 NYT bestselling author Melissa de la Cruz.

Caledon Holt is the Kingdom of Renovia's deadliest weapon. No one alive can best him in brawn or brains, which is why he's the Guild's most dangerous member and the Queen's one and only assassin. He's also bound to the Queen by an impossible vow--to find the missing Deian Scrolls, the fount of all magical history and knowledge, stolen years ago by a nefarious sect called the Aphrasians.

Shadow has been training all her life to follow in the footsteps of her mother and aunts--to become skilled enough to join the ranks of the Guild. Though magic has been forbidden since the Aphrasian uprising, Shadow has been learning to control her powers in secret, hoping that one day she'll become an assassin as feared and revered as Caledon Holt.

When a surprise attack brings Shadow and Cal together, they're forced to team up as assassin and apprentice to hunt down a new sinister threat to Renovia. But as Cal and Shadow grow closer, they'll uncover a shocking web of lies and secrets that may destroy everything they hold dear. With war on the horizon and true love at risk, they'll stop at nothing to protect each other and their kingdom in this stunning first novel in the Queen's Secret series.

~ Author Chat ~

YABC: What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

I literally had a dream about the two characters, they were hiding in the bushes watching someone, and I knew one of them was a dangerous assassin and the other one was the girl he loved. I was intrigued and wanted to write about them.

YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?

Oh so hard! I love Cal and Shadow equally.

YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?

Titles always come first for me. Then I figure out the book.

YABC: What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?

I like writing exciting action scenes in the end, if my blood is pounding then I know it’s fun for the reader as well, so I guess I like the crucial everything is revealed scene with a lot of danger and menace.

YABC: Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?

It’s all important. I can’t say there is one “most important” thing I’ve learned. But maybe this is: you are not your book. You have to separate your own self-worth from whether the book is a hit or not. Hilariously I learned this after my books were hits, and my head got so big. I realized the books were hits, but I was still me and should stay me. So now whether they sell or not, I feel the same about myself and treat everyone the same. The first thing I told my editor when she said “you’re on your way up!” was “I’ll see you on the way down!” We still laugh about it but it’s true. Success is nice but it comes with its own pressures and stresses.

YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?

I love that the blood is raised a little, so you can feel the texture. Coool.

YABC: What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2020?

I’m excited for all my books: Jo and Laurie is out in June, Gotham High, my Batman in high school graphic novel is out in April, I have two books that haven’t been announced yet that are also pubbing in 2020.

YABC: What was your favorite book in 2019?

David Sedaris’ Calypso was wonderful.

YABC: What’s up next for you?

I’m doing a lot more Hollywood work – screenwriting and adapting my books for TV. So that’s been exciting.

YABC: Is there anything that you would like to add?

My kid is now 13, and every day brings a new YA idea. It’s awesome. YA authors – just have teens!

YABC: Which was the most difficult or emotional scene to narrate?

Ah, it’s too much of a spoiler.

YABC: Which character gave you the most trouble when writing your latest book?

Cal was kind of hard to get right. I wrote the first draft and realized he was kind of more of a bungling assassin than “The kingdom’s greatest weapon.” I had to make him way sexier and better at his job LOL.

YABC: Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?

Revising.

YABC: What would you say is your superpower?

The ability to prioritize, concentrate, and work very quickly when deadlines are due. I’m also an amazing vacation planner.

YABC: Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?

Yallwest and Yallfest are two book festivals that I help organize and we bring over thousands of books to kids who need them every year.

Love the cover and the title. The word Assassin is what caught my attention. Love the plot. I guess we know one reason the Queen in the story stays in power. She probably has her assassin kill all who oppose her. I guess in that case it's good to be Queen. I can't wait to read it and see who this assassin is.
