Meet My Last Summer With Cass!

This One Summer meets The Edge of Seventeen in this poignant coming-of-age YA graphic novel about two childhood friends at a crossroads in their lives and art from the author of Mastering Manga.

Megan and Cass have been joined at the brush for as long as they can remember. For years, while spending summers together at a lakeside cabin, they created art together, from sand to scribbles . . . to anything available. Then Cass moved away to New York.

When Megan finally convinces her parents to let her spend a week in the city, too, it seems like Cass has completely changed. She has tattoos, every artist in the city knows her. She even eats chicken feet now! At least one thing has stayed the same: They still make their best art together.

But when one girl betrays the other's trust on the eve of what is supposed to be their greatest artistic feat yet, can their friendship survive? Can their art?

YABC:  What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

MY LAST SUMMER WITH CASS is very loosely based on a real life friendship I’ve had since high school, with a man by the name of John Walter. He moved to New York City in his twenties and became a film editor and director. I noticed that he seemed much more daring and avant garde than I ever was, and I began wanting to tell a story that showed just how different two creative people can be. John and I have never had any big conflicts in our friendship, though. That part is pure fiction!

YABC:  Who is your favorite character in the book?

I enjoyed breathing life into Cass, the character that is partially inspired by my friend John. Since my personality keeps me from taking very many big chances in life, it was fun to get inside the head of someone really fearless: a free spirit whose main concern is being absolutely true to themselves, no matter what the cost.

YABC:  Which came first, the title or the novel?

Definitely the novel. I originally wanted the book to be called “Two Artists,” and it had that title for quite a long time. When the publisher asked me to come up with an alternative, I hit upon “My Last Summer with Cass.” Interestingly it’s much longer than my usual titles, which often have just two words: “Miki Falls” and “Brody’s Ghost,” for example.

YABC:  Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?

Well, it’s a pretty famous one, but you can’t get very far as a writer without learning to “show, don’t tell.” No one wants to read a sentence like, “Old man Murphy was one of the meanest guys you could ever meet.” What we need is a scene in which we SEE the man’s behavior: We see him being mean to people in memorable ways.

YABC:  What’s up next for you?

I’ve just finished a book called THE COMIC BOOK LESSON, which is a follow up to one I did a few years back called THE DRAWING LESSON. Both books use the format of a fictional story, in graphic novel form, to present a series of lessons to the reader. In the new book the main character, who wants to learn how to make comics, is shown the tricks of the trade by three mentors who each have different things to show her about how it’s done. And now I’m in the middle of a new graphic novel about a high school student’s experiences in Taiwan during one particularly adventurous day. I’d better not say any more about that one for now!

YABC:  Which was the most difficult or emotional scene to narrate?

There’s a scene where Megan and Cass have a disagreement that gradually builds into a pretty catastrophic fight. In many ways the whole story had been building toward this moment, when the two of them finally are completely honest and just let loose on each other. I felt a an obligation to do this scene justice in both the writing and the illustrations, so there was a certain pressure there to “deliver the goods.” But also I had grown close to these characters, and it was hard to see all this ugliness erupt between them—even if I was the one causing it to erupt!

YABC:  Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?

This book actually involved much more revising than I’ve ever had to do on a graphic novel. I’ll be honest: It was tough having to throw out page after page of work that was deemed not good enough to make the final cut. So yeah, the revising process is not quite as fun as the drafting process for me, which is a bit more like playing in a sandbox, creating entire new worlds out of thin air. But being a good reviser is arguably even more important than being a good writer. A good story can be made great with revisions. Without them, it will always be a shabbier version of what it could have been.

YABC:  What advice would you give to new writers?

Well, it’s a pretty famous one, but you can’t get very far as a writer without learning to “show, don’t tell.” No one wants to read a sentence like, “Old man Murphy was one of the meanest guys you could ever meet.” What we need is a scene in which we SEE the man’s behavior: We see him being mean to people in memorable ways.

A graphic novel is such a good way to tell a story, it's the best parts of reading and watching a movie at the same time.
