Meet Kristen Simmons!

KRISTEN SIMMONS is the author of the Article 5 series, The Glass ArrowMetaltown, and Pacifica. She has worked with survivors of abuse and trauma as a mental health therapist, taught Jazzercise in five states, and is forever in search of the next best cupcake. Currently she lives in Cincinnati, Ohio with her husband, where she spends her days supporting the caffeine industry and chasing her delightfully rambunctious son.

Meet Scammed!

Brynn Hilder is living a life she never dreamed possible: She lives in a mansion, getting a top-rate education at Vale Hall. She has friends and an almost-boyfriend. Anything she wants, she can have.

The only catch? To stay in this life, she has to help the director of Vale Hall take down the bad guys of Sikawa City by collecting secrets and running cons.

Getting everything she wants and fighting evil doesn’t seem like such a bad deal. The thing is, she’s not so convinced anymore that Dr. Odin is really going after bad people after all. And the friends and almost-boyfriend that have made her life so different are all liars and con artists—so can she trust that any of it is real?

The stakes are higher. The cons are riskier. And nothing is what you think it is.

~ Author Chat ~

YABC:  What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

As much as I hate to admit it, I WAS CONNED! Yes, I was targeted by a con artist in my young twenties. He was a family friend, or so I thought, and by the time I realized what had happened he'd stolen much of my savings. I don't generally consider myself a person who's easily tricked, but I never saw this coming, and by the time he was caught it was too late. I've been fascinated by con artists ever since - not just how they do what they do, but the justification behind it.

YABC:  Who is your favorite character in the book?

I love all of them! Brynn is perhaps closest to my heart because she's my main character, my morally gray, leading lady con artist. But part of why I love SCAMMED and THE DECEIVERS so much is because they're stories about a found family. Brynn truly comes into her own after connecting with people who welcome her unconditionally, teach her the meaning of trust, and call her out when she needs it. She relies on Henry, Charlotte, Sam, and of course, Caleb, for more than just running cons. She needs them to build her sense of home.

YABC:  What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?

There are SO MANY twists in SCAMMED, and I am afraid to share my favorite scenes without giving any away! I'll say this...at some point Brynn will follow Caleb and learn some very interesting information. That scene was one of my favorites to write! (That, and of course the kissing!)

YABC:  Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?

SCAMMED is actually my 15th published novel, and the best thing I've learned through all of it is to love my books, and surround myself with a team that loves them too. The joy for me has always been the story, and it's so exciting to share that joy with a team that believes in the project as much as I do. Revising is hard, reviews can be tricky, but the love for the story must remain, otherwise what's the point?

YABC:  What do you like most about the cover of the book?

Um, have you seen them? They're ON FIRE!! I couldn't have imagined a better Brynn, Caleb, and Grayson for the covers of my Vale Hall books!

YABC:  Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?

Drafting for sure! I love the first stages of entering a new world, everything from those first magical moments conceptualizing the characters and the setting, to the research that builds the story, to the actual writing. I believe that revision is necessary, and makes my books better, but there's nothing like that first draft for me!

YABC:  What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2020?

SWORD IN THE STARS by Amy Rose Capetta and Cori McCarthy! I loved ONCE & FUTURE so much!!! Also, SET FIRE TO THE GODS by Sara Raasch and Kristen Simmons, out in August. I hear that's going to be a good one...

YABC:  What was your favorite book in 2019?

I really loved RED WHITE & ROYAL BLUE! What a fantastic, banterific (Is that a word? I say yes!) love story! I adored every line!

YABC:  What would you say is your superpower?

Laughter! Not only is my laugh really loud and embarrassing for most people around, it's pretty contagious. I kind of love it.

Thank you for having me! I hope everyone enjoys the latest installment in the Vale Hall series, SCAMMED! I had so much fun writing it!

This book looks amazing! I don't much care for the cover though, I tend to like ones with illustrations more than real people though.

What an interesting trio on the cover. I like how the tables may be turned in this storyline, and she might not be fighting for the side of good at all.
