Meet The Burning Shadow!
#1 New York Times, USA Today, and internationally bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout returns to the world of the Lux with The Burning Shadow, the steamy, shocking second installment of the Origin series that will leave readers reeling.
When Evelyn Dasher crossed paths with Luc, she was thrown headfirst into the world of the Lux—only to discover that she was already far more involved in their world than she ever suspected.
Because the Luxen aren’t the only ones with a hidden past. There’s a gap in Evie’s memory, lost months of her life and a lingering sense that something happened, something she can’t remember and nobody is willing to tell her. She needs to find out the truth about who she is—and who she was. But every answer she finds only brings up more questions.
Her search for the truth brings her ever closer to Luc, the Origin at the center of it all. He’s powerful, arrogant, inhumanly beautiful, extremely dangerous…and possibly in love with her. But even as Evie falls for him, she can’t help but wonder if his attraction is to her, or to the memory of a girl who no longer exists.
And all the while, a new threat looms: reports of a flu-like, fatal virus that the government insists is being spread by Luxen. A horrifying illness that changes whoever it touches, spreading panic across a country already at its breaking point.

YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?
Ah, that is a tough one. Each of the characters are a favorite for a different reason, but I’d have to pick Grayson. I know. I know. Readers of this series are probably like what the…? His general, overall unhelpfulness, even in the most dire circumstances, just makes me laugh. Unless you’re Luc, he’s not someone you’d call if you were in a bind.
YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?
Always the title. I cannot write a book unless I have a title already picked out, and if there’s a chance that title will change and I know it while writing, it messes with my head the entire time. It’s a weird writing quirk.
YABC: What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?
There are a lot of quiet powerful moments in The Burning Shadow that I’m proud of. There is one scene that comes towards the end with Evie, Luc, and Daemon that I’m pretty proud of, mainly because it’s a harbinger of what is to come and is a huge shift in the dynamics of both the Lux and Origin worlds.
YABC: Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?
Man. Okay. There’s a lot of things, but I think the most important thing I’ve learned is remember why you started writing in the first place. Probably wasn’t to sell tons of books or to hit lists or be invited to signings or events. It was just a desire to share your imagination with one other person than just yourself. That sounds simple enough, but it’s easy to get lost in the publishing sauce and to lose your way.
YABC: What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2019?
I’m really looking forward to Renee Ahdieh’s The Beautiful. Vampires? New Orleans? What’s not to be excited about.
YABC: What’s up next for you?
Book release wise? The Burning Shadow comes out October 8th! Writing wise? I’m working on the 3rd book in the Origin Series, then I’ll be doing edits on Rage and Ruin, the second book in the Harbinger Series. I may be (hopefully) finishing out the year with a new project. Also, chasing my puppy Apollo around is also what’s up next for me. That’s what I spend half my day doing at this point.
YABC: Which character gave you the most trouble when writing your latest book?
Luc. Luc always gives me trouble. On one hand he is easy and fun to write, but on the other, he’s a very layered, complex character. He may wear goofy shirts and spew cheesy pickup lines, but he exists in a moral gray area, where he’s neither good nor bad. Keeping the balance with him isn’t easy.
YABC: Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?
Revising. Drafting, in my opinion is the hard part and already done. Now it’s time to fine tune the sucker.
YABC: What would you say is your superpower?
Attracting praying mantises. I have no idea if mantises is the plural work of mantis or not, but seriously, it’s a superpower of mine.
Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?
There are a couple. National Institute for the Blind, because of the eye condition I have. Southern Poverty Law Group, because of the much needed work they do tracking hate groups and extremists within America, supporting and teaching diversity, and protecting those most vulnerable in our society. And legit any group or person that supports common sense gun law reform, so that there becomes a time when bullet-proof backpacks are not on little children’s back to school lists.
