Meet The Lady Rogue!
Some legends never die…
Traveling with her treasure-hunting father has always been a dream for Theodora. She’s read every book in his library, has an impressive knowledge of the world’s most sought-after relics, and has all the ambition in the world. What she doesn’t have is her father’s permission. That honor goes to her father’s nineteen-year-old protégé—and once-upon-a-time love of Theodora’s life—Huck Gallagher, while Theodora is left to sit alone in her hotel in Istanbul.
Until Huck arrives from an expedition without her father and enlists Theodora’s help in rescuing him. Armed with her father’s travel journal, the reluctant duo learns that her father had been digging up information on a legendary and magical ring that once belonged to Vlad the Impaler—more widely known as Dracula—and that it just might be the key to finding him.
Journeying into Romania, Theodora and Huck embark on a captivating adventure through Gothic villages and dark castles in the misty Carpathian Mountains to recover the notorious ring. But they aren’t the only ones who are searching for it. A secretive and dangerous occult society with a powerful link to Vlad the Impaler himself is hunting for it, too. And they will go to any lengths—including murder—to possess it.

YABC: What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
Film, I suppose? I’ve always been attracted to the 1920s and 30s (I’ve written an adult series that takes place in the Roaring Twenties). And I’m fond of films inspired by pulp fiction from that era, like Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and especially The Mummy (1999) with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. I wanted to write something that captured that sensibility: travel adventure, a supernatural-tinged mystery, a bantering couple…lots of atmosphere and action.
YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?
I wrote them all, so they’re all my favorites? But when the reader first meets the protagonist’s travel partner and former love interest, Huck Gallagher—a nineteen-year-old pilot from Northern Ireland—he’s half naked and cracking jokes, so let’s go with him.
YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?
My original title was White Wolf Express. I thought that up when I first had the concept for the book a couple of years ago. My publisher changed it to The Lady Rogue after the book was written. Many times an author will cling to their original title as if it were a childhood blanket, but in this case, I happily surrender!
YABC: Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?
You’re on your own. Completely. I had no idea how utterly isolating this job can be, and how much of a solitary path I’d have to forge. You *think* you’re okay with that, but you can’t truly know what it’s like to live in the dark—to not know whether a book you’ve worked on for months and months will sell, if readers will like a character, whether the market will sour on a genre, if you’ll be forgotten or discarded. I’ve been writing full-time for a decade, and it’s a terrifying way to live. Most days, I wouldn’t trade it for anything, but your mental health pays a price to live like this.
YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?
The pretty pink font juxtaposed with the scary dragon.
YABC: What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2019?
THE STARLESS SEA, by Erin Morgenstern. I was a huge fan of THE NIGHT CIRCUS. Can’t wait for this!
YABC: What was your favorite book in 2018?
I read it this year, but it was published in 2018: SPINNING SILVER by Naomi Novik.
YABC: What’s up next for you?
After THE LADY ROGUE, I have another YA contemporary summer romance coming out in spring of 2020 called CHASING LUCKY, which takes place in a quirky New England coastal town. There’s no supernatural adventure in that one, but the couple *does* get arrested together. What can I say? I like good drama.
