YABC:   What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

There are so many new and terrifying caveats to dating--or life in general--to the internet. If you're mad at someone for a moment, you can post a rant or spill a secret online and that moment is inked into daily life forever. If you're upset with someone and say something to their face, it's out there, and it might be regrettable but to the rest of the world it's either gone or never existed. Post it online and it never goes away. I wanted to explore the idea that something as in-the-moment as wanting revenge on a boyfriend or girlfriend could go well beyond just alleviating some momentary hurt. I wanted to show that a tiny little post can have huge consequences for post the one who posts and who they post it about.

YABC:   Who is your favorite character in the book?

As a writer, you tend to get a little bit tied to each of your characters and that kind of happened with the gang in THE REVENGE. On my first draft, I hated Hope. She came off as horrible for no reason so I had to change that because in my heart, I knew that what she was intending to do came from a place of hurt rather than just pure bitchiness. So when I fleshed out her story a little bit, I started to really feel for her. Don't get me wrong, she's still a piece of work, but I like that she's nuanced. She's trying to hide her weakness with this facade of strength and supposed badness but really, she's just a sad little girl. I'd say she's my favorite but then there's Tony, who I feel for throughout because he's really a good guy who makes a lot of bad choices. There were times when I wanted him to catch a break, but what fun would that be?! And then there's Alice. I kind of love Alice.

YABC:   Which came first, the title or the novel?

The original title of the book was SHARE LOCATION?-- but it never looked right or sat right. But it was really that title--that question, actually--that brought the book about. I try and be pretty good about keeping at least some of my personal life private but it's something you have to work hard on nowadays because the default is all your information is public pretty much all of the time.

YABC:   What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?

I love, love, love the scene where Hope is introduced to her "surprise"--the bedroom recreation. I think it's so deliciously creepy that someone would watch you and know you so well that they could recreate an exact replica of your bedroom and worse yet, think that would be something that would please you. I loved writing the scene and manipulating the little details--like how in Hope's real room, the paint color was custom and in the "knock off" room, the paint was almost perfect but not quite. I liked adding in all those details: how just glancing at the room it seems like a perfect replica but on closer inspection, every single aspect is off. The stuffed animals are cheap copies, the sheets are stiff and uncomfortable, and of course, there is an ankle chain in the knock off bedroom!

YABC:   Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?

Oh my goodness, so many things! 'Write every day' is an important one and one every writer and teacher of writing will tell you. And it's totally true, but it's really changed and morphed in the 7 years since my first book came out. When I wrote my first book, I was unemployed, homeless, and had recently been dumped by my boyfriend. Writing every day was a no brainer because seriously, what else did I have to do? My house had burned down and I was living with my parents. When I wrote THE REVENGE, I was newly married and very, very pregnant--i.e., throwing up every day all day. Writing every day was a joke. I was lucky if I could put on pants most days. So, I had to reevaluate and for the time being, work on writing "most days." Even then, it was hard and I discounted the days I could only write a few hundred words as "junk days." Acting like that was paralyzing me so I had to go back to the drawing board and say, "Look, all writing is good writing. Five words, five hundred words, five thousand words? They are all words on the page, and in the end that's what matters." Now I'm working on my latest book with a newborn and keeping in mind that I'll never turn to a page in one of my books and be able to say, "well I wrote all of those words in one sitting." It doesn't matter if I did or didn't; what matters is that they get written.

YABC:   What do you like most about the cover of the book?

I love the creepy vibe of all my teen thrillers! I love how cohesive they look but with this one in particular, there's something about the font that gets me. I think it's the way the V goes up and the N goes down...there's something inherently creepy about it! And the walking girl casting a long shadow...It's just...ominous!

YABC:   What was your favorite book in 2016?

I was on deadline and sick and pregnant and then had a newborn in 2016, so I only read one book (I usually read at least a dozen!). But, it was Barry Lyga's BLOOD OF MY BLOOD and it was so, so good! I devoured it in about two sittings, telling my husband, "you have to watch the baby, I just have to finish this book!" To be fair, I'm crazy about everything of Barry's that I've read (BOYTOY is a particular favorite) but I loved this one. It was creepy and twisted and I'm a huge Jazz and Howie fan.

YABC:   What’s up next for you?

I'm about 3/4 of the way through my newest thriller, COPYCAT. It's so fun! It's about a teen named Addie who is a huge fan of these Gap Lake Mystery books. She starts corresponding with the author and suddenly, the murders in her town start mirroring the murders in the book. I'm also working the text of the Gap Lake books into my book, so it's like writing two books at once. There are lots of creepy scenes, some good twists and turns, and the return of a cool side-kick best friend (a la TRULY, MADLY, DEADLY!).

YABC:   Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?

I have to say, I really hate revising but it is so, so necessary! I love drafting; I love the rush I get when my fingers are flying over the keyboard and a scene is just coming together--basically, it's writing itself. I do not love when I read it over and it reads like it wrote itself. Crazy, disjointed, missing words. Then comes the revising. There is something great about that, too, when I can fit scenes together beautifully or when a few extra lines makes everything sing. Or when axing a few lines takes the manuscript to a whole new level... But revising can be hard and downright humiliating re-reading things and thinking, "oh, good Lord, is this how I really write? So I always sound this whiny/long-winded/mean?!" I'm a big believer in swallowing your pride and gutting with gusto.

YABC:   What would you say is your superpower?

Right now I feel really devoid of superpowers! I'm a new mom on a deadline and so my superpower might be putting on pants (or at the very least, finding them) before 4pm! Actually, that being said, my superpower might be my sense of humor. My life hasn't always been as blessed as it is now, but I've always been able to find something to smile about and laugh at--generally it's myself that I'm laughing at. Like today, I realized I had gone the whole day with a banana sticker stuck to my shirt...basically right between my boobs. It's funny because I was out and about all day and no one mentioned it. It's less funny because I seriously can't remember the last time I ate a banana so I have no idea where the sticker came from or how it got there.

YABC:   Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?

I am partial to any animal rights organization or any organization that helps animals. I love all animals, but I'm partial to cats and dogs. We have an amazing cat rescue right here in my neighborhood and I'm a kitty mom to three fat, spoiled rescue cats. As a matter of fact, one of the (many) reasons I fell in love with my husband was because my shyest cat immediately cuddled up to him. That, and that and he had a rescue kitty of his own. It was love at first whisker-brush! That being said, I can't ever watch the Humane Society commercials with Sarah McLaughlin signing. I have to turn them off immediately or I'll call, send them all my money, then spend the rest of the day crying on the couch. It's happened more than once.

I think the cover is perfect for this synopsis. I definitely get that spooky 'someone's watching/right behind you' vibe. This sounds like it'll be a great thriller.
