Meet Emily Victoria!
Emily Victoria lives on the Canadian prairies with her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, works at her public library, and has just finished her Masters of Library and Information Studies.
Meet This Golden Flame!
Orphaned and forced to serve her country’s ruling group of scribes, Karis wants nothing more than to find her brother, long ago shipped away. But family bonds don’t matter to the Scriptorium, whose sole focus is unlocking the magic of an ancient automaton army.
In her search for her brother, Karis does the seemingly impossible—she awakens a hidden automaton. Intelligent, with a conscience of his own, Alix has no idea why he was made. Or why his father—their nation’s greatest traitor—once tried to destroy the automatons.
Suddenly, the Scriptorium isn’t just trying to control Karis; it’s hunting her. Together with Alix, Karis must find her brother…and the secret that’s held her country in its power for centuries.

YABC: What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
The very first thing that came to me for this book was the dynamic between Karis and Alix. Both characters, in a way, were trapped. Karis by the fact that she’s stuck on this Scriptorium island when all she wants is to find her brother. Alix by the fact that so many of his memories are locked away. They’re very different characters, but they end up having to rely on each other in order to get what they want. And that was what made me really excited to write the book.
YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?
Definitely the novel. I think the title went through at least four different variations, including the original one I gave it during NaNoWriMo as well as a version that was quite close to what it currently is.
YABC: Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?
I’d say the most important thing I’ve learned is to enjoy whatever stage I’m currently at. Looking back, I spent a lot of time wishing that I would be able to finish a project, or get an agent, or get a book deal, when the truth is that the journey to get those things was just so amazing on its own. Every stage of this process has given me the opportunity to meet other writers and readers, to write the projects that I’m passionate about, and to enjoy myself.
YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?
I love so much about the cover: the color palette, the beautifully designed text, the fact that it’s a cover that has my name on it! But I will say that my favorite aspect is the depiction of the orb in the center. It was so cool seeing an element of my book brought to visual life.
YABC: What’s on your TBR pile?
So many books! I’m one of those readers with an embarrassingly long TBR list. However, two of the books I’m really looking forward to diving into are Girl, Serpent, Thorn and Girls of Paper and Fire. Looking forward to this year I’m really excited for These Feathered Flames by Alexandra Overy.
YABC: What’s a book you’ve recently read and loved?
I’ll Be the One by Lyla Lee. It’s a fantastic book, and its cover is just so amazing!
YABC: What’s up next for you?
My next book is titled Silver in the Mist and it’s set on a continent with dying magic, divided between two countries. The main character is a spy and she’s sent across the border to capture the strongest magical caster left. But when she meets the caster, things do not exactly go as planned.
YABC: Are there any film adaptations, tv shows, audiobooks, or other adaptations in the works for this book?
There will be an audiobook coming out, and I’m so excited for it. It will be so amazing hearing my characters’ voices.
YABC: Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?
Definitely revising. I really don’t like drafting, but as soon as I can get to that editing stage where I can take this confusing mess that I wrote and really shine it up, I’m good. I love digging deeper into the world and the characters through revisions.
