Meet Casey L Bond!
Casey Bond lives in West Virginia with her husband and their two beautiful daughters. She likes goats and yoga, but hasn't tried goat yoga because the family goat is so big he might break her back. Seriously, he's the size of a pony. Her favorite books are the ones that contain magical worlds and flawed characters she would want to hang out with. Most days of the week, she writes young adult fantasy books, letting her imaginary friends spill onto the blank page.
Casey is the award-winning author of When Wishes Bleed, the Frenzy series, and fairy tale retellings such as Riches to Rags, Savage Beauty, Unlocked and Brutal Curse. Learn more about her work at www.authorcaseybond.com.
Meet With Shield and Ink and Bone!
A hard-earned shield.
Days before she is to take her place as a shield maiden, like her mother before her, two deaths alter the course of Liv’s future. One belonged to a witch who called her by name, the other a chieftain from the north. Vengeance for the chieftain’s death comes in a wild fury that burns her village and slaughters her family. Left for dead, Liv pleads to Skuld – norn and weaver of the future – to spare her. A deal is struck that will endow her with the dark magic needed to claim her vengeance. But this power comes at an unfathomable price…
Ink made from the ashes of loved ones.
After his home is attacked, Calder races to warn neighboring villages of the threat. Little does he know he’s traveling into the path of fate that will lead him straight to Liv. Despite being broken, angry, and overwhelmed by power she cannot contain, it’s her willingness to defend others that draws Calder to her.
Armor forged from the bones of those she held dear.
Together, Liv and Calder discover they are two sides of the same sharpened blade. Rising from the heartache and fury in their pasts, they see a future together worth fighting for. With their strengths and hearts combined, can they become a force powerful enough to defeat the fleet of darkness coming for them? Or will the thread of fate that binds them unravel?

YABC: What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
I've always been fascinated with past cultures and civilizations. The way the world once worked fascinates me, so I certainly find the Vikings interesting. Their lore and religious system, the way they view life after death, and societal expectations are all something I wanted to incorporate in With Shield and Ink and Bone, and though I took some liberties, I hope I was able to transport readers back in time with Liv's story.
YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?
It is most certainly Liv Ericsson. She is one of the most vivid characters I've ever written and this story is hers. It was never mine. She showed me a story of destruction, of resiliency, and how love can overcome even the strongest hatred humans are capable of.
YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?
Definitely the novel! I called it "The Viking Book" for months. But when the title came to me, I knew in my bones it was right. It fits the story perfectly and is as strong as the character who uses the three things named in the title - shield, ink, and bone.
YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?
I love the vibrancy and realism of the snake. If you look beyond those fangs, you'll see Liv's shield, inscribed with her protective rune line. It's dark, dangerous, and encapsulates the story. Melissa Stevens did a beautiful job on the cover.
YABC: What’s on your TBR pile?
I'm reading Blood & Honey by Shelby Mahurin right now and am patiently waiting for Celestial by Olivia Wildenstein. I want to read Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer, as well.
YABC: What’s a book you’ve recently read and loved?
Fable by Adrienne Young. I was fortunate enough to order a signed copy so I'm excited about that. She's certainly an inspiration and one of my favorite authors. Her stories are so vivid in my mind and I love how beautifully she paints a scene.
YABC: What’s up next for you?
I'm currently working on another YA fantasy with witches. If you liked When Wishes Bleed, this one might be up your alley.
YABC: Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?
Definitely drafting. There's something very freeing about letting your mind unfold on a page. I am a discovery writer, AKA pantser, so I generally have an idea of plot points, but the characters reveal the spaces between them. I have often wished I could plot a book and plot it well, but I work best by letting things happen. Revisions are tough. They can be grueling. Someone once said that drafting is shoveling sand into a pile and revising like sculping a castle out of it. I absolutely love the entire process, though, because the end product is something very personal that came from a place in my heart. No matter the content or characters, every one of my books has a part of me in it.
