Meet Death By The River!

A High School "American Psycho"

SOME TRUTHS ARE BETTER KEPT SECRET.
SOME SECRETS ARE BETTER OFF DEAD.

Along the banks of the Bogue Falaya River, sits the abandoned St. Francis Seminary. Beneath a canopy of oaks, blocked from prying eyes, the teens of St. Benedict High gather here on Fridays. The rest of the week belongs to school and family—but weekends belong to the river.

And the river belongs to Beau Devereaux.

The only child of a powerful family, Beau can do no wrong. Handsome. Charming. Intelligent. The star quarterback of the football team. The “prince” of St. Benedict is the ultimate catch.

He is also a psychopath.

A dirty family secret buried for years, Beau’s evil grows unchecked. In the shadows of the ruined St. Francis Abbey, he commits unspeakable acts on his victims and ensures their silence with threats and intimidation. Senior year, Beau sets his sights on his girlfriend’s headstrong twin sister, Leslie, who hates him. Everything he wants but cannot have, she will be his ultimate prize.

As the victim toll mounts, it becomes crystal clear that someone has to stop Beau Devereaux.

And that someone will pay with their life.

WARNING: Readers of Death by the River will encounter situations of violence and sexual abuse/rape which could be upsetting.

YABC:  What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

Death by the River was born from a nightmare. Lucas Astor has strange dreams. After teaming up with him on a multi-award-winning series, we felt my experience as a nurse with victims of sexual assault could breathe life into the characters who suffer at the hands of the psychologically twisted Beau Devereaux. My understanding of mental health issues also brought to life Beau’s decline into depravity.

YABC:   Who is your favorite character in the book?

I am torn between Gage and Beau. I think some of the best scenes in the book are between them. I love writing very dark characters, and they don’t get more twisted than these two.

YABC:   What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?

The confrontation scene between Beau and Gage. Gage lays out his feelings for his son in no uncertain terms, making it clear he knows Beau has a problem and he will not allow Beau to screw up the family name or business. We see where Beau gets his twisted tendencies in this scene, and also how the pressure of a parent can negatively impact a young adult.

YABC:  Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?

Keep writing and listen to the editors you work with. From every one, you will learn more and your writing will evolve. You may hate what you hear sometimes, but if you listen and work through the criticism, you will be a better writer. And never stop writing. Writing is a muscle that can only get stronger if it is used every day.

YABC:   What do you like most about the cover of the book?

It’s stunning, isn’t it? It is so the story. It is dark, scary, and I think reflects Beau’s mindset.

YABC:  What’s up next for you?

In the spring of 2019, a favorite epic story of mine will be published by Vesuvian Books. Realm is an historical YA about the sixteen-year-old Persian wife of Alexander the Great, Roxana. With no noble blood, and very little education, she traveled with Alexander and his army across India and Persia. She was loved by him and when he died at the age of thirty-two, she was pregnant with his only heir. Her life becomes a race to stay alive and see her son on his father’s throne. But she is a pawn in the war dividing up Alexander’s Empire. Roxana and her son struggle to survive numerous wars and conspiracies. It is both a love story and a sweeping drama about the plight of a woman in ancient times. History tells his story. This is hers.

YABC:  Which was the most difficult or emotional scene to narrate?

The scene where Leslie and Taylor are in the kitchen and Taylor confesses what Beau did to her over a bowl of ice cream. That one tore me up because I could see it happening and feel Taylor’s confusion and pain.

YABC:   Which character gave you the most trouble when writing your latest book?

Leslie and Dawn, the twin sisters were the most complicated characters to convey. They both had to grow, but in ways that would be believable in the context of the story. I wanted to show how they were very different as twins, but also the same.

YABC:  Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?

Revising. You lay the groundwork for the story in the first draft. With the revising, you get to add the color and depth to the storyline and make it emotionally challenging for the reader.

YABC:  Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?

I am a wildlife rehabber with the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries, so any cause that helps promote the care and welfare of animals is close to my heart. Animals are my passion, along with writing.
