About the Book: A Magic Fierce and Bright

A young technomancer teams up with a handsome thief to save her sister in this propulsive, magic-filled young adult fantasy that is perfect for fans of Gearbreakers and Iron Widow.

Adya wants nothing more than to be left alone. Content to be loyal to no one but herself in the isolated jungles of South India, she dreams only of finding her lost sister, Priya, and making enough money to take care of their family. It’s too bad that her rare ability to wake electric machines—using the magic that wiped them out five centuries ago—also makes her a coveted political pawn. Everyone seems to believe that her technomancy can help them win the endless war for control over the magic’s supernatural source.

These senseless power struggles mean little to Adya. But when her enemies dangle news of her sister before her, she’s all too quick to leap at the chance to bring Priya home—even if it means teaming up with a rakish, disreputable thief in order to do it. With the threat of invasion looming ever larger on the horizon, Adya must reconcile the kind of person she is with the kind of person she wants to be and untangle the web of intrigue, conspiracy, and deceit that threatens to take all of India down with it.

YABC: When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I knew I wanted to be a writer from a very young age. By third grade, I was typing away on an old typewriter in the basement, putting together stories to hand out to kids on the bus the next day where they were the main characters and had stolen the school bus for an action-packed joyride.

YABC: What can readers expect to find in your books?

Readers can expect to find a great deal of action and a fast pace with great characters and a story with a lot of heart and love in it. Of course, there’s plenty of magic and fantasy, but I always try to make friendship and love and goodness central to the story, albeit they have to struggle against a lot of evil.

YABC: Who is your favorite character?

Well, the main character, Adya, is my favorite, but there is a very close second. I love Adya’s determination and deep emotions she’s extremely bad at expressing. That said, the motorcycle is also beloved because it was unexpected. I realized while writing that if Adya was able to bring a motorcycle back through magic, that motorcycle might have its own personality and desires. AND THEN IT HAPPENED. That motorcycle came alive and was pure emotion and desire for revenge and pride and love and it’s kind of irresistible.

YABC: What gave you the inspiration to write A Magic Fierce and Bright?

I wanted to write a fantasy set in India and I had an idea of a land in the future where technology no longer worked and now magic was the main power in the world. IF in this world, one girl could bring old machines back through magic, wouldn’t that be a fascinating power? That’s how it started.

YABC: What’s a book you’ve recently read and loved?

I’ve loved All Systems Red by Martha Wells and that entire series. I love how human and full of emotion and fun the main character is and could follow them anywhere.

YABC: What’s up next for you?

I’m writing another fantasy! In this one, the main character is a thief who can see through the eyes of a raven and switch places with it and they live in a dark city ruled by a syndicate of wizards. I’m still drafting it but am really enjoying how it’s coming together.

YABC: What character gave you the most trouble when writing?

One of the antagonists, the Maharaja, gave me the most trouble. He is complex, conflicted, contradictory, and driven. I understood his motivations in my heart but had to make sure to convey them as best as possible on the page when he was likely to betray others.

YABC: What word do you have trouble overusing?

I overuse terrible, which is terrible!

YABC: Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?

I have long supported the Save the Children Foundation and believe they do amazing work throughout the world for children in need.

YABC: Is there anything else you would like to add?

I just want to say that I really hope that kids and adults everywhere really enjoy the story. I truly believe it’s a lot of fun, full of heart and emotion and magic, and also packed with wonder, which is one of the biggest reasons we read fantasy.
