YABC:  What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

I have always loved reading mysteries from Nancy Drew to Agatha Christie and everything in between.  In addition to the joy of reading mystery books, they also help kids with problem-solving and deduction. Writing a mystery book for younger children has always been a dream of mine. When I thought about a younger audience an idea formed in my mind about a wise young sleuth and her ghost dog who used to solve mysteries with Natty’s famous great-grandparent. This book started out as a picture book and eventually became a chapter book with 4 mini-mysteries  with diverse characters. .  Scooby-doo has always been a favorite of mine, too, so I found a creative way to incorporate him into one of the mini-mysteries.

YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?

I love all the characters but of course, Detective Natty and Doggy Dale are both my favorites.

YABC: How do you know when a book is finished?

I usually have a rough idea of the story  although it goes through several iterations. Books need to have a strong story arc and a character arc and follow a similar format of introduction, plot, climax, and resolution. The ending

YABC: What research did you do to write this book?

I read various types of mysteries and researched famous detectives and spinone italiano dogs.

YABC: When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I knew I wanted to be a writer when I was in the 6th grade and my teacher gave us an assignment to write a book and I was completely hooked. I took creative writing courses in high school and college but didn’t know quite how to become a published author and my other dream was to become a nurse.

YABC:   How do you keep your ‘voice’ true to the age category you are writing within?

I draw upon my own life experiences,  my experiences raising my children, and I continue to read tons of children’s books. Visiting schools and bookstores to share my books also helps me to keep my “voice” true to age.

YABC:  What word do you have trouble overusing?

The word “very” is the word  that is overused the most so I always go back and edit and remove the word.

YABC:   What is your favorite writing space?

My favorite writing space is in my living room sitting on my couch and using my laptop. I usually have the TV on or music for background noise.  I write in an atmosphere of controlled chaos.

YABC: What hobbies do you enjoy?

I enjoy hiking, gardening, painting, and reading.

YABC:   What do you do when you procrastinate?

I do so many things when I procrastinate. I will take my puppy outside to play, clean up the yard, do some gardening, I might watch TV or text my friends, or check my social media, or start a project in the house.

YABC: What kind of animal would your main character be and why?

A puppy/dog because I love puppies/dogs and they have so much personality. I have several books with dogs as the main or supporting character because they have always been an important part of my life.

YABC: What is your favorite holiday or tradition and why?

I enjoy all the holidays but my favorite is Thanksgiving because I love the fall, the cool crisp air, the foliage, and the pumpkins.  I have so many wonderful memories of sharing special Thanksgivings with my family. When my kids were younger we would go to the Thanksgiving Day parade which was always somewhat magical. There is something so comforting when the aromas of turkey and stuffing and pumpkin pie fill the house and each year is unique and different as my family grows.

YABC: What other age group would you consider writing for?

I have written two middle grade books and would like to write some more books for this age group. I would also like to write a romance/mystery novel for adults.

YABC:   What’s up next for you?

I am working on the second book in the Detective Natty and Doggy Dale Mini Mystery series. I have four picture books that will be published by Touch Point Press next  year and a contract with Clear Fork Publishers to publish the 2nd edition of Essential Oils, Teas, and Self-Care. I am also working on a middle grade book that needs some major revisions.  I am also trying to find homes for several of my picture book manuscripts and know eventually someone will fall in love with them.
