Sometimes finding love means taking the scenic route ... Living with her faultfinding mother has taught Leslie not to ask for much. Just watch your step, stay on the sidelines, and take what you can get. But she wants a mom who thanks her for cleaning the kitchen instead of yelling at her for missing a spot, and a boyfriend who does more than score her a seat at the popular table—someone who actually notices her sitting there. So when Cain, the school heartbreaker, turns his Carolina blue eyes her way, Leslie can’t help but be tempted, even if he’s her boyfriend’s best friend. Things get even more complicated when Leslie strikes up unlikely friendships with Meredith, Cain’s girlfriend, and Dennis, a boy addicted to cigarettes and solitude. Despite his tough exterior, Dennis seems to understand Leslie in a way that no one ever has, and to need her as much as she needs him. For the first time in her life, Leslie feels like she could belong. She’s just not sure where.

I was very interested in this book and want to thank Netgalley and Indie linked for giving me the chance to read and review it!

What I loved:

I really enjoyed how "real" the book was. Leslie does not have a perfect home life, far from it actually. My heart hurt for her. It was so nice to read about a character with so much depth and to truly understand why she acted the way she did. I was extremely upset at her mother. As a mother myself, I get that we sometimes take things out on our children, but seriously, Leslie's mother took it way too far.

The interaction between Leslie and Dennis. From the first time he was mentioned in the book, I was very curious about his character. He has a lot of depth to him, too! It was awesome to read about two characters with an actual story behind them, and not just superficial high school stuff. There was superficial high school stuff, don't get me wrong, but there was so much more to this story!

Learning more about Leslie and Dennis. I really enjoyed learning their back stories, and how they were able to eventually open up to each other. It wasn't love at first sight or anything, but their friendship grew and I loved reading about how that happened.

What left me wanting more:

I wouldn't mind an update on the two characters! :)

Overall, a great read. I really enjoyed this book. It was raw, gritty and honest. Thank you Riley Graham for this book!
