Nancy Pelosi grew up watching her father, the mayor of Baltimore, welcome in people of all different backgrounds to sit at their table and make their voices heard. Nancy's mother always stood beside him, working behind the scenes to help her husband and the people he served. When Nancy grew up, she continued working behind the scenes in politics until a friend asked her to run for Congress herself--jump-starting a 33-year career as a political representative and taking her higher than she could have once imagined.

Young girls, especially, will be inspired by Nancy's journey and her commitment to using her voice to help others and to make sure women are heard in government. The back matter also includes an exclusive interview with Nancy Pelosi herself.

What worked: Inspirational story of the first woman Speaker of the House. This book shows what motivated Nancy Pelosi in her early years as the daughter of a Baltimore mayor. Her family believed in serving the less fortunate. But it was when a friend asked her to run in a special election to fill her spot in the U.S. House of Representatives that Pelosi decided to run. She had many critics brush her off as just a housewife. Her campaign slogan was 'A voice that will be heard'. This slogan went back to the times she witnessed as a child her mother speaking in Italian to immigrants and showing these people their value.

At the back of the book is an interview with Nancy Pelosi. Also in the author's notes, there are mentions of how there were 510 men and only 25 women in Congress when she first arrived at the nation's capital. There are also mentions of how she grew up with a sense that public service was a noble calling.

This picture book does an amazing job showing a trailblazer in politics and gives a message to young girls that is motivational and empowering.
