As the youngest and only female member of the Knights Templar, Bilqis SanGreal grew up knowing she wasn't normal. Instead of hanging out at the mall or going on dates, she spends her time training as a warrior in her order's ancient battle against the Unholy.

Billi's cloistered life is blasted apart when her childhood friend, Kay, returns from Jerusalem, gorgeous and with a dangerous chip on her shoulder. He's ready to slide back into Billi's life, but she's met someone new: amber-eyed Mike, who seems to understand her like no one else and effortlessly stakes claim on her heart.

But the Templars are called to battle before Billi can enjoy the thrilling new twist to her life. One of the order's ancient enemies has resurfaced, searching for a treasure that the Templars have guarded for almost a thousand years - King Solomon's cursed mirror, a source of unimaginable power. To save the lives of millions, Billi will have to put her heart aside and make sacrifices greater than she could have imagined.

Editor reviews

Bilqis 'Billi' SanGreal is the youngest and only female member of the Knights Templar. Her life consists of training to be a warrior. She has no time to be a normal teen like her peers. Then her close friend Jay comes back into her life. He left on a secret mission to Jerusalem and only now tries to reconnect with her. Then another guy catches Billi's attaction, cute and mysterious Mike, who seems to understand her better than anyone else.

But a series of events push the Templars into action. An old enemy has resurfaced and wants something the Templars have guarded for thousands of years--King Solomon's cursed mirror. In order to save millions of lives Billi will have to make the ultimate sacrifice. A sacrifice that is greater than anything she could imagine.

I really liked this tale of the youngest female Templar who struggles with her 'duty' and the harsh treatment of her leader father. Add to that her confusion on her feelings for Jay and the cute new guy Mike, who's way more than he seems. Billi battles such things as ghuls--soul sucking demons that have sold their souls for immortality and fallen angeles. All this while still going to high school.

Action filled with twists and turns that often catch you off guard, this is a must read for fans of Tamara Pierce. Billi is one butt kicking heroine who also shows her strength by her vulnerabilities. She doesn't want to be a Templar but a regular teen but finds that might not be an option.

The final battle took me by surprise. As does the choice she has to make at the end. Will she be strong enough to do what must be done?

Highly recommended.

Devil's Kiss is entertaining, full of information, and has a tad too much exposition to keep the story flowing like an exciting thriller.  While the main character of Billi Sangreal is a likeable and realatable character, she sometimes comes off whiney and childish.

Background knowledge on the Templars is a must, and Chadda does a pretty good job bringing the reader up to speed on the details.  However, these constant breaks in the story really hurt the flow and intensity of the action.  It is easy to lose interest in what is going on, and I found myself flipping forward to the action scenes and potential relationship triangle.

For a first novel, it is a winner, and even though it is a necessity, I would just like to see more story, and less of a history lesson.  I eagerly await the next book to see what is in store for Billi next.
