Anita Blake may be small and young, but vampires call her the Executioner. Anita is a necromancer and vampire hunter in a time when vampires are protected by law—as long as they don't get too nasty. Now someone's killing innocent vampires and Anita agrees—with a bit of vampiric arm-twisting—to help figure out who and why.

Trust is a luxury Anita can't afford when her allies aren't human. The city's most powerful vampire, Nikolaos, is 1,000 years old and looks like a 10-year-old girl. The second most powerful vampire, Jean-Claude, is interested in more than just Anita's professional talents, but the feisty necromancer isn't playing along—yet. This popular series has a wild energy and humor, and some very appealing characters—both dead and alive.

Editor reviews

"No." I slammed my hands into the stone. It stung, but not enough. "No!" I smashed my fist into the floor. My whole arm tingled and went numb. "NO!" I pounded my fist into the rock over and over until they bled. Pain was sharp, real, mine. I screamed, "Get out of my mind! You bitch!"

I crouched on the floor, panting, cradling my hands against my stomach. My pulse was jumping in my throat. I couldn't breathe past it. Anger washed through me, clean and sharp-edged. It chased the last shadow of Nikolaos's mind away.

I glared up at her. Anger, and behind that terror. Nikolaos had washed over my mind like the ocean in a seashell, filled me up and emptied me out. She might have to drive me crazy to break me, but she could do it if she wanted to. And there wasn't a damn thing I could do to stop her.

Anita Blake would love to have a normal life. Ignorance, as they say, is bliss. It's hard to have a normal life, however, when you raise zombies for a living, help solve supernatural murders, and execute vamipres on the side. Despite her busy schedule, Anita is perfectly content with her life. That is, until a series of vampire killings brings her to the Master of the City. Nikolaos is cruel and powerful beyond imagining, forever trapped in the body of a child. Now Anita must find what is killing the master vampires to save her life, along with that of her friends. What could make matters worse? Jean-Claude, a handsome and alluring master vampire, marking her as his human servant, and Edward, killer extraordinaire, arriving on her doorstep, determined to get information about where the Master of the City is hiding, even if he has to torture her to find out. It seems wherever Anita turns she has enemies. Can she fight them off on her own? She must, or everyone around her will suffer. Anita must fight for her life, and her very soul.

Guilty Pleasures is an extraordinary first novel of the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter collection, unlike any other vampire series I have read. Laurell K. Hamilton will delve into your mind and completely change the way you see the world of the supernatural. Zombies, vampires, lycanthropes, ghosts, ghouls, and witches; sexual tension, odd friendships, gut-wrenching terror, and intriguing mystery; the Anita Blake series covers virtually everything, and each book will have you salivating for the next. The most recent addition to the series is Skin Trade, released June 2nd, and is book number 17. In the summer of 2010, the Anita Blake saga becomes a movie series on IFC.

This is my favorite series (the first half anyway) of all time! Anita Blake is the perfect heroine and I love everything about her except maybe her stubborn attitude. I love the world LKH has built and the characters she has given life to. Her writing is amazing and she will always remain one of my top 5 favorite authors.

This is the first book in about a 17 book series. I have to say, when I first picked up the book off of a friends coffee table, I didnt think I would like it. I am seriously into Anne Rice's vampire, a purest if you will. And I didnt think that raising zombies was something that would interest me at all. But, when Jean Cluade gets introduced and discribed...let's just say there is no putting down the book. It keeps you in it. Anita is very...fresh....very honest...and sometimes thats exactly what you need. She has no problem saying what she thinks. She feels a huge attraction to Jean Claude, but doesnt want to get involved with a "walking corpse". I am very much in love with this book. And I have recommended it to everyone I know...well at least the ones that i know read. :)

This is a fantatstic series of book for OLDER readers that love adventure! Guilty Pleasures is about a vampire executioner who must put back her hate for the undead to help the Master of the City. Anita is a funny character who will have you laughing and have you wishing you could be more like her because of her boldness and strongwill. Will she be able to push her hate back to catch a serial killer murdering vampires? After you read this book you'll only be able to think about getting the next book. This is a series that will suck you in and have you asking for more.

What can I say this is a great book. It keeps you guessing. If you are a fan of Buffy this would be a good book for you. Anita Blake a strong, independent women with a strange talent to rises the dead. This book shows that size does not matter, weather trying to save lives or ruling a community of vamps with fear and brutal tactics.

The master of the city calls upon Anita for help, she unwilling must assist. But Anita doesnt know what she has gotten herself into, because not only does she have one vamp mad with her when she is not as exactly cooperative as she hoped, but she also, has a vamp lusting after her by the end of the book. This was a great book and I cant wait to read the rest of the series:D

"In Guilty Pleasures, Laurell K. Hamilton introduces us to Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter. Anita's small, dark, and dangerous. But when the city's most powerful vampire comes to her for help, Anita is faced with her greatest fear - a man capable of arousing in her a hunger strong enough to match his own..."

I expected this book to be a lot like Hamilton's Meredith Gentry novels, but this better in some ways. There weren't any really graphic sex scenes and the book focused more on a plot. It was a nice change. Vampire fans will be in heaven when reading Hamilton's Guilty Pleasures, as well as zombie and lycanthrope fans.
