Love is confusing, in any century

Annie Lockwood is a romantic in today's world. Her boyfriend, Sean, is more of a grease monkey and even refers to her as "ASL" (Anna Sophia Lockwood), rather than by name. She yearns for something more, something with romance, something with feeling and heart. And then she finds it, when she travels backwards through time and meets Strat and his family.

But things aren't really any easier in 1895. Annie and Strat fall for each other, but he was meant for Harriet, a sweet girl who loves him. This love triangle eerily matches another in Annie's own time; her father is in love with another woman (a younger, perkier woman than Annie's mother).

What will Annie do? What can she do? Will she stay with Strat in a time of lovely ball gowns, where servants wait on you hand and foot, but women have little control over their own lives? Or will she go back to her own time, where the simple things are overrun by modern convenience and there's so little romance left?

Romance readers will love this series, though some of the rapid point-of-view changes can sometimes be a little confusing. It brings up questions to think about, like how far would you go for love? And, is it sometimes better to let things go? Recommended for readers aged 12 and up. And if you like this one, you'll definitely want to check out the other books in the series: Out of Time (where Annie returns back in time to try and save Strat) and Prisoner of Time (Ted, Annie's brother, gets involved with Devonny, Strat's sister).

A Great Time Travel Story

Annie is a “romantic in the wrong century,” but her boyfriend is more interested in his old cars. But one day at the derelict mansion outside of town, when “something was wrong with the day, or something wrong with her” she falls back one century and falls in love with Strat, a boy who is everything she’s been dreaming of—everything her boyfriend is not. He is handsome, honorable, and heir to the Stratton mansion and fortune.

The 1880s seem incredibly romantic to Annie, so much better than her own ugly, plastic century. It is an age when men are men and women are women and no one mistakes one for the other. The men are charming and chivalrous. Their courtliness is so attractive to girl whose boyfriend expected her to load his tools in his truck for him. What could be better than to wear beautiful, feminine dresses and live in a luxurious mansion?

But it’s also a time of tremendous stiffness and formality. Even young people call each other by their formal titles of Mr. and Miss. And everyone is expected to “modulate” themselves and be subject to elaborate “rules of behavior.” Women’s lives are even more restrictive than the corsets they wear.
Strat is fascinated by this beautiful free-spirited girl that lands in his world. He is both attracted to and shocked by her unconfined body and bare legs. Unlike his peers, he seems willing to let her be who she is, and loves her in spite of her alien nature.

But Annie realizes that we don’t own time as we think we do with our clocks and watches. Time owns us. We are a product of our time. Will her relationship with Strat be sustainable in a world where men make the rules and govern the lives of their women, own their women? A world where a woman who doesn’t marry ceases to have any value? In Strat’s world women are so desperate for marriage that they sometimes give up relative freedom and a chance to go to college to marry repellant men old enough to be their fathers, men who only want their money.

Annie is a "Century Changer.” She can choose which century she wants to live in. But no matter which century she chooses, someone will be unhappy. She has made a mess of it on both sides of time. If only she can keep everybody safe and still get a happily ever after for herself.

Good Points
I love the time travel concept and the way Cooney describes the process. Very cool. Very mysterious.

Reader reviewed by shourie

This book is an amaizing book. The story is about Annie Lockwood when she travels back in time and meets a boy named Strat. Strat and Annie fall in love but he is promised to another girl named Harriett. Annie has to choose between her life and her boyfriend and Stratt. This book is a magical romance and will leave you in tears. I strongly recomend it to people ages 12 and older. This book, in my opinion, is the best book ever.

Anne Lockwood is a time traveler

Reader reviewed by Evabell

Omigod. I absolutly love this book. My friend made me read it and i got so involved that i read the other three books. They were really good too. I wish they'd make it into a movie series. Anne Lockwood time travels back to the late 1800's and meets a man and they fall in love, but something happens when they find out she is a time traveler. Which century will she live in?

the thing that Annie wants most is true romance, true love.one day shes with her boyfriend (the most unromantic guy in the world who perfers to work on his car than talk to her.)at this old mansion working on his car.she goes inside and goes back in time. Their she meets and falls in love with strat, a boy from 1895. In doing so though, she changes the future.

Annie Lockwood a fifteen year old who somehow ends up living in the year of 1895 falls in love with this century. She also finds love she loves everything about this century and she really wants to stay will she? I loved this book because it talks about the years in the past and I just love when authors do that!!!
