Of the four, it's Beck that has the most to lose. He's the smart one of the bunch, and he could be -- SHOULD be -- going to college. His parents certainly think so. But he has a pact to honor, and so Beck enlists in the US Air Force.
As their tours of duty near completion and the war itself spirals further out of control, the four best friends are at last on a collision course. Will they all survive long enough to be reunited?

Heart wrenching end to awesome series
I don't understand why middle school boys are so intrigued by war, but they are. World War II used to be the big interest, but with more and more middle school students having grandfathers who were involved in Vietnam, I have had a lot of requests for books from that era, and there aren't a lot of them out there. This four book series is tremendous. It gives the boys what they want (lots of violence and descriptions of fighting) but certainly points out that war is an awful, awful thing.
