Humongous Book of Cartooning
Become a Cartoonist!
Have you ever dreamed of being able to draw cartoons? Frankly, out of the many skills I do not have, this is the one that most appeals to me. Since my artistic skills are on the minimal side, I'd given up hope--until I got my hands on this enormous (when they say "humongous" they're not joking) guide book.
Author Christopher Hart says in his introduction that he's included everything he wishes he had known when he started cartooning. He begins his easy to follow and simple to understand instructions with the basics of drawing cartoon character heads, starting with nine basic shapes. Taking each shape, he shows how to apply them to different cartoon characters, with an oval turning into a pony-tailed teen girl's face, a squirrel gazing out from a circle, and so on. Next, we plunge into building our own characters, with reassuring messages and directions from Chris Hart along the way.
Along the way, we learn cartoonist magic (for example, how to add perspective, how to add movement to a drawing, and how to make characters that are perfect for fantasy). This book is simply a wealth of cartooning tips that are almost guaranteed to get readers' hands itching for a pad of paper and a pencil. . .and to fill would-be artists with inspiration. Highly recommended.
