Life Lessons Learned

Flint Hill Elementary is planning a big anniversary celebration. The students decide that painting a mural is a great way to leave their mark on the school, and Jefferson is chosen to organize this part of the celebration. He learns a difficult lesson about making everyone happy when many people have to work together on a project. The rest of the book follows other characters through their own journeys of self-discovery, from Sebastian with his taffy business that runs into trouble, to Genevieve who has to watch an egg for a week as a school project. Talmadge goes fishing and tries to land an epic catch, and Sam tries out for a play. Alec has troubles keeping his room clean, and ends up with a rat infestation! In each story, children learn an important lesson about themselves.

Good Points
This has some elements of Betty MacDonald's Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle books in that the children all face a challenge, but the magic comes from their own efforts to rise to the occasion. They learn the importance of truth, tenacity, and kindness. All of these qualities help make the world a better place, and it would be nice if children practiced them a bit more.

Readers who like books from a variety of viewpoints, like Buyea's Because of Mr. Terupt or Anderson's Posted will enjoy this slim volume.
