great summer read for Clifford fans
In a delightful summer read, Emily Elizabeth, Clifford, and friends are spending a day at the pool. Emily Elizabeth wants to earn her Cool Kahuna Badge, which requires her to swim with three strokes, go to the bottom of the deep end, and jump off the high dive. Clifford and friends help her to practice, but when the high dive is broken on the day of the test, they must find a new solution. Luckily, Clifford is there to help!
This book is a fleshed out story of the journey to earning a badge at the pool including the goal and the steps towards making it happen. As such, the story has quite a few words, and would be appropriate for a preschool through lower elementary aged reader to enjoy with parents.
What I loved: The book is a goal-directed journey through practice and success. This is a great message for young children who are beginning their own journeys. With the pool setting, it is also a fun book for summer reading. The images are very cartoony and illustrate the journey described in the text very well. With bright colors, the images will also appeal to the designated age category.
Furthermore, there are some great depictions of feelings along the journey that are a small but great addition for the young audience. There is also good diversity in the cast of friends who help Emily Elizabeth to reach her goals.
The book also includes stickers from some of the scenes of the book at the end, which are a delight for young readers to create their own artwork based on the book or to just enjoy.
Final verdict: This picture book is a delightful, goal-oriented journey for Emily Elizabeth to earning her swimming badge. From practice to success, this book features many emotions and a whole lot of summer pool fun- plus, of course, everyone’s favorite big red dog.
