I just re-read this recently with one of my ESOL students. Dr. Seuss just makes me happy.

I didn't realize this was a verse novel when the list went out. I'm in a huge verse novel phase right now, so will have to check this one out at the library!

Me too. Reading it was such a new and exhilarating experience. I just wish it had a bit more meat. It's easy to miss things/veiled meanings and get confused.

I'd love to see more books written in this format, but maybe with more connections to the characters.

I really want to read this! Someone recommended it to me last week and there is a huge waiting list at my local library. Your review got me psyched to work my way up the list.

I was just looking for this book this weekend. It's not at my local B & N, nor in my library system, but I am determined to find it because I've heard such great things.

I had the same feeling about the writing--it was really obvious the author comes from a romance writer background... and it wasn't what I had hoped. And lots of telling too. Thanks for posting your review! Now I might post mine and not feel badly about it heh

To be perfectly honest, after recently finishing both volumes of M.T. Anderson's incredibly ambitious historical tale, I certainly do understand why I had avoided it: the 18th Century Arcaic language it was written in! However, while Mr. Anderson, and Octavian for that matter, challenged my will and endurance, I undoubtedly found much reward in the end. There is much to be admired, inspired, sickened and despised in the numerous pages of this novel.

Gah. Thank you. I almost thought I was the only one who had an issue with the writing style.
