See through the hype

Self-image is a hot topic for teens. At the same time your body is going through some crazy hormonal changes and your brain is developing and absorbing new things, youre also assaulted with ads, articles, and news stories that seem to tell you that youre not good enough. That you arent thin enough, or pretty enough, or tall enough, or fashionable enough&or, well, you get the idea.

There are a number of books now that deal with this topic, both non-fiction and fiction. In All Made Up, Audrey Brashich (a former model and editor for major teen magazines) takes her inside knowledge and turns it into something positive. Given her experience, her voice rings with authority that teens can believe in.

She explains how digital enhancement is commonly used, turning already beautiful people into something beyond what any normal person could possibly attain. And how supermodels are created, how the look is promoted and how its all about selling. She gives practical tips on how to look through the hype and see the truth underneath. How to stay true to yourself and keep your eyes open. She gives tips on how to deal with the people who have bought into the hype and keep your confidence.

Even though this is a serious topic and an important one, the tone is light enough to be engaging and interesting. This isnt the kind of book that youll necessarily read straight through, but something you might pick up and read a chapter of when you need some reinforcement. I could also see this being useful in health classes and in school libraries. Recommended for girls aged 12 and up (or even younger). And Moms? This would be a great book to read with your daughters.
