Judy Moody Declares Independence by Megan McDonald and Peter H. Reynolds

Judy Writes Up Her Own Declaration of Independence
a review by Terry Miller Shannon

Judy's family visits Boston, where they see the historical sights of the Freedom Trail. As they're roaming a touristy Tea Party ship, Judy meets Victoria, a girl from England. The two strike up a friendship, and agree to become pen pals.

On her way back home, Judy compares her life with Victoria's--which makes her sorely jealous. She composes her own Declaration of Independence, including freedoms such as "freedom from brushing my hair" and "freedom from homework." Unfortunately, her parents are underwhelmed. Judy decides to impress her parents with how responsible she is in order to earn more independence. . .but will it work?

JUDY MOODY DECLARES INDEPENDENCE continues the tradition of the series, with its spunky heroine, pleasantly subtle lessons, and lively plot--and should be irresistible to young readers.
