Chasing Blue is the second book in Jessica Burkhart’s fantastic CANTERWOOD CREST series for tweens. The rabid audience for this book includes one young reader I know who is absolutely horse-crazy and eagerly awaits each installment. She has found her heart’s desire in this series that combines her passion for horses with her drive for academic achievement. The touch of romance doesn’t hurt, either. Sasha Silver returns to CANTERWOOD CREST and her beloved horse, Charm, after winter break, only to find that her riding partner will be none other than Ms. Attitude (aka: Heather Fox). Even Sasha’s budding relationship with her main crush-boy seems to be changing as he spends more time with Heather than he does with Sasha. But, how can Sasha change things when it’s all she can do to keep her head above the ever-growing academic waves that are flooding her at the academy? As young adult fiction turns more and more to social dramas, this author responds with an age-appropriate middle grade series that will keep readers engaged and satisfied. The characters are equally relatable and enviable, allowing just enough room for daydreams for those readers out of the private boarding school realm, while keeping problems realistic. What tween girl hasn’t had a frenemy or two? What school doesn’t have its competition? And who hasn’t had heartache over a crush? At the rate this author churns out books, there’s no need to worry about long waits. The next book in the series, BEHIND THE BIT, has already hit shelves, with another scheduled to come out this summer and more in the fall. Keep an eye out! Off to turn another page….
