This lovely picture book, written by Alison L. Randall and illustrated by Bill Farnsworth, is an engaging and inspiring tale beautifully illustrated in a realistic way. Each page is a delight! And it is based on a true story.
On the Utah frontier in the late 1800’s, Mary Ann has one cherished doll who is also her best friend. Even though homemade and stuffed with wheat, the little doll, Betty, is very important to Mary Ann because she is the only one with whom she can share her secrets. One day while out doing chores, a sudden storm forces her to go inside without rescuing Betty from the garden. The doll is lost and cannot be found. But as the seasons pass, Mary Ann doesn’t give up hope—and spring arrives with a delightful surprise. In the garden, there is a patch of freshly sprouted wheat with a silhouette in a very familiar shape…
This is Alison L. Randall’s first picture book, and what a vivid and heartfelt story she tells. I look forward to reading more of her books in the future. Bill Farnsworth’s wonderful illustrations are works of art, conveying the beauty and remoteness of the landscape. The facial expressions on the little girl tell the story of her emotions and what a devastating loss it must have been for her to lose her beloved doll. Together, the author and illustrator have created a memorable and enjoyable book about love, hope, the realities of frontier life, and the magic of nature.
