Liliana has plenty of father figures. The problem is, she doesn’t have any good father figures. One’s dead, one wears women’s stockings, one’s not real, and one’s creepy. Out of those, who will be her protector? Her hero? It looks like Lily will just have to cowboy up and become her own hero.
This is easier said than done. Lily feels helpless as she watches her sister struggle in an abusive marriage and when her best friend is no longer friendly.
The best part of this book is the amazing voice. Lily is flawed, uncertain, bold, shy, outgoing, and utterly perfect—all these things wrapped up into one tiny protagonist. Even now, days after reading her story, I have Lily stuck in my brain. She makes quips, imitates John Wayne, sings, and shares little fears.
Carrie Jones is a natural at character-building and storytelling, as evidenced in her two previous books, HOW TO HAVE A GAY(ex)BOYFRIEND and LOVE (AND OTHER USES FOR DUCT TAPE). Lily, though, Lily sits right next to Judy Blume’s Margaret on the shelf of “characters I’d like to be friends with.”
In the meantime, I'm holding my breath, waiting for the new Carrie Jones book. Wagons forward!
