Izzy (also known as Isobel Lingard) had the perfect life. She was popular, pretty, a cheerleader...and a senior had just asked her out on a date. That date changed her life forever. In the blink of an eye, her date passes out from alcohol consumption and crashes into a tree while driving her home. He walks away, but Izzy doesn't. She loses a leg. Most of us can't imagine what it would be like to go from perfect to "not-so-perfect." This book shows you that the change is in the details. The little things that you take for granted become big things that you can't handle alone. You really feel Izzy's pain when she discovers that something as simple as making a phone call has become difficult. Izzy isn't the only one affected by the accident. Her friends don't know what to say to her. Her sister is torn between jealousy and pity, while her mother and father make every sacrifice they can. Izzy learns that she must find strength within herself; there are some things that you have to do for yourself. Even though the book starts with a tragedy, it is a hopeful and uplifting story. Izzy finds new friends and learns to depend on herself. By the end, you can see that her horizons are expanding, rather than contracting. This book truly gives hope to anyone who has ever felt inadequate or lost, not just those that are handicapped.
