Top Five Cursed Couples
Hello! I am thrilled to be on YA Books Central today! Thank you for having me.
I love top five lists! Okay, I confess, I typically end up making fudging my lists to include more than five, but in this case I stuck to the rules. Since Allie and Cody from my novel Summoner are a couple whose relationship is being pulled apart by a curse, I thought it appropriate to pick my Top 5 Cursed Couples. (Aside from Allie and Cody, of course.)
You know those moments when you want to ship your favorites, but it’s not that simple because a stupid curse is ruining everything? But that “ruining” is actually driving the story along in this amazing page-turning or episode-bingeing way. Yeah. Them. So here’s a tribute to some of my favorites in no particular order.
First up is Richard Cypher and KahlanAmnell from Terry Goodkind’s Sword of Truth series. Wizard’s First Rule anyone? It’s one of my favorite books. *presses hand over heart* Basically, they can’t be together because if she touches him and loses control of her powers, Richard would cease to be himself. They’d lose each other forever. Talk about a problematic curse.
Next up, Zero and Yuki from Vampire Knights. Please tell me you’ve seen it or read the manga (I haven’t—yet) or signed the petition for Netflix to make a season three. Well, when a vampire falls for a human, but stays away from her because he doesn’t want to hurt her due to his inhuman thirst for her blood, it’s never a good sign that the couple will turn out happy, right?

Have you read The Raven Boys yet? Blue Sargent lives with a bunch of psychics and she has been told all her life that if she kisses her true love, it’ll kill him. Yeah. Not a curse I think I could live with either. But seriously, read the books.
I gotta say, when I heard the opening line of the movie Tangled, I wanted to turn it off and retreat to a corner and mourn that Disney could be so cruel. Then I decided to watch it anyway. #noregrets Seriously, though. A girl with a dreamer’s heart and adventurer’s spirit should not be forced to live her whole life locked in a tower. And when she meets a man she could fall in love with, she should be able to stay with him and not have him be doomed to die. Right? Oh my gosh, I love these two.
What about superheroes, who are cursed in a way because they have to keep their identities a secret? I have to admit, I turned on Ladybug and Cat Noir to watch with my four-year-old daughter, thinking it would be a cute superhero story we could totally watch together. Oh. It was. Buuuuut I might have
continued watching after she went to bed because the CHARACTERS. And the love story! I know. I’m an adult. But seriously! The *moment* with the umbrella. Heart. Melt.
So, awesome cursed couples, who did I miss?
