Meet Erica Cameron!

After a lifelong obsession with books, Erica Cameron spent her college years studying psychology and creative writing, basically getting credit for reading and learning how to make stories of her own. She’s the author of several series for young adults including the recently released Assassins duology. She’s also a reader, asexuality advocate, dance fan, choreographer, singer, lover of musical theater, movie obsessed, sucker for romance, Florida resident, and quasi-recluse. She loves the beach but hates the heat, has equal passion for the art of Salvador Dali and Venetian Carnival masks, has a penchant for unique jewelry and sun/moon décor pieces, and a desire to travel the entire world on a cruise ship. Or a private yacht. You know, whatever works.

Meet Island Of Exiles!

In Khya’s world, every breath is a battle.

The Five Things You Need to Know to Survive Shiara

 

  1. Stay hydrated.

This is the desert. Imagine the landscape of Arizona or New Mexico or southern Nevada. Now, imagine yourself lost in that sort of a landscape in the middle of the summer. Dehydration will kill you quick on Shiara, so carry water. Eat plants that hold water. Always drink when you find an oasis. Basically, never forget that water is life. Lack of it is not, however, the thing that’ll kill you fastest on this island.

  1. Don’t pet the wildlife.

No, seriously. Don’t. Shiara is like Australia—everything there can kill you. And they’re actively trying to. The scaled teegras will tear you apart with vicious claws and teeth, the kamidis will spit venom that eats you down to bone, the pira fish will gladly gnaw the meat from your fingers if you’re not quick enough, and the unwary might get plucked up by a massive mykyn bird and made dinner for its nest. 10/10 do not recommend trying to make friends with Shiara’s animal population. It won’t end well for the human.

  1. Beware of storms.

There’s no such thing as a little storm on this island. True, storm season is only three moon cycles out of the whole year, but it’s bad enough to drive the entire clan of Sagen sy Itagami underground. Flash floods, lightning, gale winds, tornadoes—we’re talking disaster-movie-worthy storms. If you’re caught in the desert when one of these strikes, run back to the city. Not possible? Then, your first step must be finding shelter high enough off the ground to avoid flooding. There really aren’t any other options if you’re going to make it through this alive.

  1. The enemy is out there.

You’re not alone on Shiara, and the other clans are just as desperate for resources as you are. Despite the invisible, but immensely strong, magical ward protecting Sagen sy Itagami’s territory, enemies can find or create weak spots wide enough for a squad to squeeze through. Or an army. As you walk through the desert, keep an eye on the hills—archers might be watching. When you’re on patrol through the mountains, listen for anything out of place—the enemy might be about to ambush.   1. Don’t ever leave Sagen sy Itagami alone.

The strength of the clan is the clan; that’s why it’s forbidden to leave the city alone. Find your travel buddy, stick together, and protect each other with your lives. It’s the only way anyone makes it back to the city alive.
