Gina Ciocca graduated from the University of Connecticut with a degree in English, but in her mind, she never left high school. Catching cheaters and liars is a lucrative hobby—until you fall for one of the suspects. Perfect for fans of Veronica Mars, this new novel from the author of Last Year’s Mistake will steal your heart!
Marisa never planned to be a snoop for hire. It wasn’t like she wanted to catch her best friend’s boyfriend making out with another girl. But as her reputation for sniffing out cheaters spreads all over school, Marisa finds herself the reluctant queen of busting two-timing boys.
And her next case? It’s for ex-frenemy Kendall. She’s convinced her boyfriend, TJ, has feelings for someone else and persuades Marissa to start spying on him. But the more Marisa gets to know sincere and artistic TJ, the more she starts to fall for him. Worse yet, the feelings seem to be mutual. Marisa knows she needs to give up her investigation—and the spoken-for guy who may just be the love of her life. Then she uncovers new secrets about Kendall and TJ, secrets that take “cheater” to a whole new level...
Top 5 Books to Read in 2018
I admit it. With a small child to care for, a house to run, and two books being released within 9 weeks of each other in 2018, most of the reading I did in 2017 was... well, words that I’d written. So it’s not surprising that my goal for 2018 is to devour as much creative beauty of OTHER minds as I possibly can, and here is where I plan to start:
1.) THE AFTERLIFE OF HOLLY CHASE by Cynthia Hand (HarperTeen, October 24, 2017)
This book came out in October 2017, but if you’re not quite ready for the holiday season to be over, here’s your fix. Holly is a teenage, female, Hollywood incarnation of Ebenezer Scrooge, who doesn't reform after being visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future.
Then she dies and has to deal with the consequences. I’ve yet to not love one of Cynthia Hand’s novels, and I am SO ready for more ghosts in YA!
2.) THE ASTONISHING COLOR OF AFTER by Emily X.R. Pan (Little Brown, March 20)
The description of this book has me drooling. A girl who travels to Taiwan in search of her mother’s ghost, all while trying to reconcile that the day she finally kissed her long-time crush was the same day her mother took her own life? My gut tells me that I’m going to be destroyed in the most beautiful way when I finally sit down with this one.
3.) LEAH ON THE OFFBEAT by Becky Albertalli (Balzer + Bray, April 24)
2 words – SIMON SEQUEL. Is there really anything else left to say if you loved SIMON VS THE HOMO SAPIENS AGENDA? Not only does Becky Albertalli write the most realistic, lovable, hilarious stories and relatable characters, she is also one of the best people you will ever meet. Read everything she ever writes. Seriously.
4.) THE IMPOSSIBILITY OF US by Katy Upperman (Swoon Reads, July 31)
This was actually one of the few books I did manage to read in 2017, and I’m so glad I did. Following a move to quaint Cypress Beach to be near her sister-in-law and niece after the death of her brother in Afghanistan, the last thing Elise expects is to meet and fall for Mati, an Afghan boy. Nor is she prepared for the outright, prejudiced disapproval of her family. Beautiful writing, relevant subject matter, and sizzling sexual tension that you won’t want to miss.
5.) THE GIRL YOU THOUGHT I WAS by Rebecca Phillips (Harper Teen, July 31)
I read and loved Rebecca’s THESE THINGS I’VE DONE, and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a copy of her newest release, a story about a seemingly perfect girl living a double life as a shoplifter. I may have pined so loudly for it that an ARC happened to land in my hot little hands. Phillips’ slow-burn romances and heartfelt character relationships, mixed with just the right amount of drama and angst, are my personal book crack. I can’t wait to see what THE GIRL YOU THOUGHT I WAS has in store. Uh, no shoplifting pun intended.
