"Believe in the unexpected" with this hilarious, heartwarming, and much-anticipated sequel to the New York Times bestseller The Fourteenth Goldfish!
Ellie's grandpa Melvin is a world-renowned scientist . . . in the body of a fourteen-year-old boy. His feet stink, and he eats everything in the refrigerator--and Ellie is so happy to have him around. Grandpa may not exactly fit in at middle school, but he certainly keeps things interesting. When he and Ellie team up for the county science fair, no one realizes just how groundbreaking their experiment will be. The formula for eternal youth may be within their reach! And when Ellie's cat, Jonas Salk, gets sick, the stakes become even higher. But is the key to eternal life really the key to happiness? Sometimes even the most careful experiments yield unexpected--and wonderful--results.
Jennifer L. Holm is a NEW YORK TIMES bestselling children's author and the recipient of three Newbery Honors for her novels OUR ONLY MAY AMELIA, PENNY FROM HEAVEN, and TURTLE IN PARADISE. Jennifer collaborates with her brother, Matthew Holm, on two graphic novel series -- the Eisner Award-winning Babymouse series and the bestselling Squish series. Her new novel is THE FOURTEENTH GOLDFISH. She lives in California with her husband and two children.

YABC: What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
Quite honestly, my readers. I thought that The Fourteenth Goldish was a one-off. But once it was out in the world, it seemed to take on a life of its own. Kids were constantly asking me what happens after the book ended. Do Raj and Ellie get together? What happens with Grampa Melvin? And what about Ellie’s old friend, Brianna? After a while, I started wondering, too.
YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?
Melvin, of course. ☺ He’s inspired by my dad who was a doctor.
YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?
The novel. I struggled a bit with the title.
YABC: What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?
I wanted the romance to feel authentic to the age of the characters.
YABC: Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?
Writing never gets any easier.
YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?
I love the cover! It was designed by Tad Carpenter who did the cover for Wonder. I like the punchy, bright colors and how he incorporated a mushroom into the microscope. It’s incredibly clever.
YABC: What’s up next for you?
My brother, Matt Holm, and I have a new Babymouse book coming out next July. It’s called Babymouse Tales from the Locker: School-Tripped
8. Is there anything that you would like to add?
The Fourteenth Goldfish is being developed as an animated feature film!
YABC: Which character gave you the most trouble when writing your latest book?
I did struggle a bit with Melvin. I wanted his concerns to reflect his life experience.
YABC: Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?
I love revising! Revising is where all the magic happens for me.
YABC: What would you say is your superpower?
Telling my children to go outside and play so I can get some writing done.
YABC: Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?
A cat in my life strongly influenced the storyline of this book. So, always support your local animal shelter.
