Welcome to the second cover reveal of the day, YABC!

Today we’re super excited to celebrate the cover reveal for SYMPTOMS OF BEING HUMAN by Jeff Garvin, releasing February 2, 2016 from Balzer+Bray/HarperCollins. Before we get to the cover, here’s a note from Jeff:

Greetings, YABC readers! I am excited to share with you the exclusive cover reveal for my forthcoming debut novel, Symptoms of Being Human. Because the book’s narrator, 16-year-old Riley Cavanaugh, is gender fluid, I was very curious to see how the cover would emerge; how could we represent Riley in a meaningful way without including the bias of gender? Designer Sarah Kaufman came up with an image that I find both striking and intriguing. I think it represents Riley perfectly, and somehow matches the tone and feel of the book in a way I couldn’t have imagined. I’m thrilled by this cover; I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

About the Book

The first thing you’re going to want to know about me is: Am I a boy, or am I a girl?

Riley Cavanaugh is many things: Punk rock. Snarky. Rebellious. And gender fluid. Some days Riley identifies as a boy, and others as a girl. The thing is . . . Riley isn’t exactly out yet. And between starting a new school and having a congressman father running for reelection in uber-conservative Orange County, the pressure—media and otherwise—is building up in Riley’s so-called “normal” life.

On the advice of a therapist, Riley starts an anonymous blog to vent those pent-up feelings and tell the truth of what it’s REALLY like to be a gender-fluid teenager. But just as Riley’s starting to settle in at school—even developing feelings for a mysterious outcast—the blog goes viral, and an unnamed commenter discovers Riley’s real identity, threatening exposure. Riley must make a choice: walk away from what the blog has created—a lifeline, new friends, a cause to believe in—or stand up, come out, and risk everything.

“With a main character who truly deserves to be called unique, combined with heartbreak and triumphs that are universal, this unforgettable book made me laugh and also cry. Garvin’s powerful new voice rocks!” – Lissa Price, International bestselling author of Starters

This seems like it will be very interesting to here about the adventure the main character goes through, and either choosing the safe path or the risky path in the end. The cover adds a nice touch with just the hair showing so people don’t assume or give an opinion of what gender she looks like she is.
